Sounds like you're the guy who clawed his way up from disadvantaged beginnings and now feels like the world owns him something. I congratulate you on your accomplishments. But you will get nowhere in Japan without a little humilty. You will get nowhere tooting you own horn and being a bull in a china shop in this culture. If you feel like it's not for you, I would advise you pack your bags and leave now. It is not for everyone. |

You may be wondering why I deleted all my previous posts, well what's the point? It isn't helping me find a job or to look forward to living and working here, so why bother?
To those of you who think I'm an idiot, I have a final word to say:
I completed my BA with honors in 3 years during which time I spent one month in Mexico and 9 months in China working as an ESL teacher (during my time as a student as well). I also completed a 5 week TEFL program while studying full-time in my last year of Uni. I did all this having only a grade 10 education beforehand (was homeless at age 16). I've been employed by numerous schools in numerous countries. I've been published in numerous magazines as well, in the US and Germany. Oh, and I almost forgot, I've given university lectures in Canada and Germany as well.
So I pose this question to you (similar to the one I posed to the boss at GES): Either myself and all my previous employers, students, and university Professors were idiots and the people who think I know nothing are smart, or the reverse is true. Which is it?
See ya! |
A 3 year BA AND a 5 week TEFL course? My god, I can't imagine why they aren't beating down your door with 85,000 yen/hour job offers.
Remember: Modesty will get you nowhere in Japan. When you suspect your co-workers and magagers at NOVA aren't giving you the respect you deserve, be sure to whip out that degree and TEFL certificate so they know they aren't dealing with some sort of run of the mill expat loser. |

Keith, in case you haven't noticed. Employers here don't care.
You can have degrees up the wazoo but if you dont package yourself you wont get hired, period. The way you dress, your atitude in the interview. Your old jobs in China or Europe is now history. Past tense.
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what you can offer them? How have you set out your resume. Are you even employable here? What is your attitude like? At the moment it sounds conceited and angry.Petulant even. Not a good attitude to go into an interview with. No one owes you a job here.
I have qualifications and publications too and 15 years experience and I still get rejection letters. In fact I have more experience and qualifications than you.
Can you afford to turn your nose up at jobs like NOVA in your situation? Its your choice, and at the moment you don't have many. A BA is simply required for your visa and not all employers require a CELTA, which after all is only a one month course.
You've given lectures at a university. Does that mean you were hired by the university or were you simply a guest speaker?
This is all very nice but it doesnt help you find a job here and a place to live. Conversation schools (which is all you can get with a Bachelors degree here) dont care about how many schools you taught at. Most will think you are unteachable and not willing to do things their way. Why would they hire someone who knows it all and can run their company better than they can. After all they've been doing it for years without you.

You are not stupid and academically qualified.
As far as having street smarts, finding your way around this country, knowing how to do things and get what you want without alienating people who can help you, you still have a lot of learning to do.
Yes you are in trouble here, but its only because you put yourself there and calling everyone else idiots doesnt solve anything. We still have jobs and careers and still get paid. You don't.
Having all your degrees and qualifications doesnt bring you closer to getting hired in this country.

Hotshot "luxury imports" come and go on Dave's, but they rarely stick around.
You can think of yourself as highly as you wish, but to Japanese employers (and the people on the forum) you're just another teacher looking for a job.
You may think you're the cat's ass when it comes to teaching (and maybe you are) I don't care to question your credentials -- I was also an instructor at a Canadian college. Big deal! But however hot you are (or think you are), your attitude stinks! And that's why people are reacting to you the way they are.
You can hardly plead cultural ignorance as you yourself have admitted to knowing that the nail that sticks up gets beaten down.... Then you have the chutzpah to write that even if they beat you down you will still stick up above the rest.
Then, like a child throwing a temper tantrum you go back and delete all your posts just so you can save face and preserve your "godly" image. I'd say there's someone like you passing through every few months. When people fail to bow down and worship the ground you walk on, you just mouth them off and find new ground to spew your crap.
Leaving? yare-yare! |

OH, my mistake, a 4 year BA! That would be a big deal except of course for the fact that a 4 year BA is what everyone who teaches English in Japan has.
The TEFL certificate and other stuff is very well and good, but like everyone has said its basically just enough to get your foot in the door at the bottom feeder Eikaiwas.
This isn't a market where you can just rest on your laurels and expect high paying jobs with wonderful benefits and respect to fall into your lap the second you get off the plane. You aren't in Germany anymore and that attitude of entitlement is going to have to change if you expect to survive long in Japan. In Japan, English teachers work for a living. |

Well, have to appear to be working in the prescribed manner at least.
Keith, it's a shame that GES overreacted and felt they had to let you go, but your priority now should be finding an employer who will sponsor you, not trying to explain yourself over and over to anyone on Dave's. People on this site can give you a hard time even when you have done everything right and little wrong, so you were always going to get it in the neck right away for simply not ensuring you'd have more than tourist status here should things go pear-shaped (which they did). |

For anyone who is interested I just got a mail back from a friend who teaches students out of her home just outside Frankfurt. She gets about 50 euros an hour.
Anyone who says he gets 1.5 million yen a day or 800 euros is dreaming. |

KISS MY ASS!!!!
Obviously you guys are as moronic as the boss at GES!
I didn't botch anything. The school didn't know that they were hiring a teacher. They thought they were getting some out of work loser who couldn't make it in his own country, just like the lot of you I suspect!
I didn't have a choice about working with jet lag.
I have no idea what's up with the school in Fuji.
Nova is a hole, I already know that, but I've already spent 70,000 yen on hotels and I need a bloody apartment.
Europe does have standards for language teaching, I.E. The Common European Framework.
(deleted by me) Sorry
PISS OFF!!! |
LOL. I just started reading this thread and I noticed that keith was at the same time systematically deleting all his posts. So I thought I'd race ahead to the last page and quote this one before he erased it so it would remain for posterity.
Good luck with the NOVA interview, big guy!

Wow! I feel sad. Poor Keith |

Do any of you remember THIS guy?

This dude reminds me a lot of him. Same arrogant attitude. As I said earlier, we get these types every so often and then they get shocked when people take the piss out of them.
In a perfect world everyone would be polite and stick around to be helpful to others, but this ain't it. |

I've been following this thread and I'm on Keith's side. Im hoping Keith gets the job with Nova, and is sent to my understaffed branch. I can already picture his first day, following his first lesson with a really low level student (dont want to give those newbies a high level student who might see through the BS of most teachers.)
The way I picture it going down is the following:
JStaff: How was she?
Keith: She couldnt say her name!
JStaff: Is she close to revel up?
Trainer Did you do listen and repeat with her?
Keith: Listen and repeat? Thats not how you teach a language!
Trainter: "Its been my experience in the past 15 years at Nova, that this is the most effective way to teach the English language.
Aussie Girl: I cant wait for warm weather so I can get to the beach. Aww, I miss the beach.
American guy to British guy: Youre always drinking tea.
British guy: Theres absolutely no way I could make it through a day with these insane creatures without an extra kick or two.
Trainer to Keith: I understand youre new here, but during the professional 3 days of training, we drilled you with listen and repeat.
Keith: When I was in Germany making the equivalent of 85,000 Yen per hour, I never heard of this method.
JStaff: Nani.
Aussie Girl: Ahhhhhh. (Sigh.). Germany.
British Guy: Nothing but a bunch of bas-tards if you ask me.
American Guy: Keith, as youve noticed from our textbooks, written by people with professional training and experience, this isnt Germany.
Keith: Maybe I should go back there. Or Shanghai. I was a celebrity there. I got to smoke in non-smoking trains. I ate a dog.
Following this, Big Ben starts ringing. The British guy leaves with a snicker, as does the American. The Aussie girl gives a sigh, thinking of the beach. The JStaff is confused, but goes out and gives her sales pitch that she was taught to give during these counseling sessions. The trainer, realizing he has break, writes in the log book that Keith doesnt know listen and repeat. Keith goes to his next lesson, thinking about how hell change Nova, and make it better. He'll title his first special voice, "My 3 days in the slammer " His next assignment will be casual Friday's, where all employees can wear jeans. |
