Sorry, but here in Mexico it is VERY probable that a good many L2 learners WILL live in the country where L2 is of dominant use--or will visit it frequently.

Especially if they are learning L2 in:
1. language schools
2. universities
3. bilingual private schools at any level

The other common category where English is offered is that of the public schools--where the teachers are almost all Mexicans who do not speak the language, and therefore folks who are native speakers teaching EFL and possibly participating in this forum would not be working.

Even with the first three groups, we are talking about a large population group. And to make it even larger--the largest group of folks immigrating illegally to the US is from the fourth category.

Given that both Guy and I are working in Mexico, we probably have a different perspective than some other posters.

I think most PEOPLE in Mexico won't go and live in an English-speaking country, but most STUDENTS certainly will visit, live there, or have a career where much English use is called for.

Mexico City sees a wide variety of learners. In company English classes, the theme is very much about travel or at least having frequent contact with English speakers.

A huge group indeed. I rarely get them in my classes though.

Teacheringreece...I pretty much agree with you on L1 use in the class.
