Two bookstores I specially like are 'Robinson Crusoe' at 389 Istiklal Caddesi and 'Pandora's Box' - just off Istikala up at the Taksim Square end.

There is also a good German Bookshop.

And BBC is easy to get? Is that like BBC1 and BBC2? Does that mean I won't have to miss out Top Gear?? Great Smile

Another question, how about Istanbul for the music lovers? I've been spoiled rotten with the music venues here and all the great concerts I have been to in the past 10 years.
I am particularly into alternative music but have the feeling that the bands I like don't play in Istanbul that often.
Well, I might go to see Tool before I leave and already regret I did not go to see Morrisey...

That is like no. You will get Top Gear on BBC Prime but have to put up with The Lost World again. It was only on at Christmas.

mmhh, does that mean there is no BBC1 and BBC2 in Turkey? I'll have to check out what BBC Prime is, never heard about that.

Are there shops in Istanbul where I could buy running shoes? I run in Oasics which should not be too difficult to find. They cost around 80-100 here and if sports shoes like that are hard to find or double the price I might get some new ones over here.

I got the news that the ministry of education did aprove my degree and that the forms for the visa application are on their way to Holland! Now I can apply for the visa while I am here!!

Also I made a call to the travel agency who told me not to worry about the flight and wait a bit longer cause the tickets get cheaper then. If I fly with a charter big chance I get a cheap ticket! They say the planes usually fly back to Turkey half empty and it shouldn't be a big problem taking lots of luggage with me and arranging a deal with the airline.

Smile

It's all going very smoothly until now and I wonder when the first problems will occur!

How long did it take from the time the school sent your documents to the Ed. Council to be approved? I'm still waiting for a bit over a month.

Hi Girls,

Ok ok, I know I need to lose a bit of weight but I'm currently like a size 16 US and about 5'8. I think there will be NO cute clothes options for me in Turkey. I'm bringing five huge bags each weighing about 70KG. I love fashion. Any suggestions or comments about what I might expect in terms of clothing choice?

Caterinamh,

Your selection will definitely be limited if you shop in Turkish clothing stores (bigger sizes tend to be matronly, if they exist at all). One of my friends here is an American size 8 and she fits the Xtra Large trousers... I can't even fathom fitting them and I am a 10-12. However, all hope is not lost. I have found that Mango, Zara, Evans and other slightly pricier (and foreign) shops do have bigger (read- size 10+) sizes. They also fit more accurately. There is actually a Plus size shop in the new Cevahir mall, but the name escapes me. I think it is for size 14+. I've tried trousers on in Turkish clothes shops and even if they fit, the cut is very very very wrong. They seem to think all women are tubular. Go figure. Tops are easier by far (but I am small up top).

Stock up before you go but do not despair. It's getting better every year, selection-wise.

There aren't too many decent gigs over here. As soon as I get my Beach Boys covers band sorted though.............

(you don't play bass by any chance do you?)

I know several shops that sell big sizes but they are in the south of Turkey. Good jeans, nice jackets...fixed price of 30 YTL. T-shirts cost 12 YTL.
I'm not quite sure how big 16 US is, but they have until 54 European, which is HUGE. If you're ever going south, just let me know and I'll show you the way.

Marks and Sparks has larger sizes and a fab bra collection for girls who are a bit big in the boob department.
