That's 8000 RMB per month. Highest I've seen advertised for university jobs in China. Right, no freelancing opportunities. Add that to the negative list.

I've only just seen this thread. I worked in 2001-2004 for a Shanghai university [Shanghai Dian Ji] and the salary was 8000 rmb, average class hours 16. No airfare, but an annual bonus that worked out the same, and heaps of freelancing available, usually offered by the school itself. I see their salaries have fallen since then, and this seems common in China. Inflation goes up, salaries stay the same or you work longer hours or pay even goes down. Ten years ago, 4,000 a month was quite comfortable if housing was supplied. You'd need minimum 6,000 now, although no doubt out in the boonies eating lots of noodles 4K is OK. And don't tell me student fees have stayed the same! So I'd say the good ol' FT is getting done over but, given that most don't stay long and there's no sort of professional organisation - just every person for his or herself - its hardly surprising.
I guess there are some canny souls who've been around the block who can make a reasonable living, but most are getting royally screwed, IMHO. No stats. No conference papers, just IMO.
