Well, if as VietCanada said, people were actually welcome to express at least an occasional opinion (unless stating completely crazy or unclear things such as "Pinker is a lizard monster that devours a hundred lemmings for breakfast, lunch and dinner" - "Wot, 100 or 300 a day?! Eh eh eh?!?!"), and those opinions could be processed without so much instant per(s)nicketiness, easy snideness and outright personal hostility all the time, then the forums could be a much more pleasant and conducive place, John. And until more people than just me are possibly willing to try to get over themselves, I fear the miffedness will generally continue (you think you're the only person with grievances? Man up, for goodness' sake!).

Dear fluffy,
Opinions, fine - misconstruing whatever someone else posts, not so fine.
This
" . . . mine are certainly very different from yours. I've found it to be pretty evenly spread among all generations, from 20-somethings to geezers like me. And having had a lot of experience in my 20+ years of EFL with British, Irish, Australian, etc. "native speakers," well, in MY experience, British EFLers were at least (and probably more) afflicted than other nationalities.
So, if it's anecdotal "evidence" that we're using, I suspect that, thanks to longevity, I've may have a lot more of it than you do."
is not this
"Johnslat's apparent insistence that no experiences other than his could really count . ."
as I'm sure you know.
Regards,
John |

| Well, unfortunately or unjustifiably or not, I construed it that way, and posting it again and again and again isn't going to change that construal. What you write is never guaranteed to be how others will take it, and I'd have thought as a language teacher and long-time forumite you'd have been aware of that by now. No heinous misrepresentation intended, and I doubt any has been perceived, at least not by many others. A sense of proportion is needed, I think. |

Dear fluffy,
"I'd have thought as a language teacher and long-time forumite you'd have been aware of that by now."
I'd have thought a long-time teacher/hamster would be a lot better at "construing."
What keeps me miffed is that you kept/keep trying to evade admitting that what you posted was not at all my meaning or intention.
My sense of proportion isn't faulty, but "apparently" my opinion of you has been.
Regards,
John |

| Sometimes my powers of construal do fail to give the "correct" interpretation. Funny, that. I guess I'll need to live with it, and the low opinions so regularly expressed by you and others, and not just in relation to me, come to think of it. |

OK John, you didn't INSIST, but was I actually welcome to contest your anecdotal experiences in any way? Your dismissal of the "non-anecdotal" usage manual quotes was after all rather abrupt (well, it seemed abrupt to me, anyway). And I'd gone to all that trouble to type up the stuff from the Merriam-Webster from scratch, too! Boo hoo hoo...hoo...hoo <sniffle> |

Dear fluffyhamster,
I'm just too much of an other animal-lover, I guess - can't stay mad at you.
Are we good?

Sure John. I must apologize to you. I actually recall reading that post of yours two ways, I guess the stuff since then (and mainly from other posters) made me start to veer to a negative rather than positive reading of it. Sorry. |

Dear fluffyhamster,
Two Our Fathers and three Hail Marys should cover it.
You can take the boy out of the seminary, but you can't take the seminary out of the boy.

Father (almost) John |
