Not so fast, Hod! Check these entertaining beauties out.

Some basic tips for good concept questions are:

-Don't use the new (target) grammar in your questions

Quote:
Target sentence: Look! They're painting the wall
Checking questions
Is it happening now? Yes
Can you see it? Yes
Is the painting finished? No
Are they painting now? Yes
Is this the past, present or future? Present

Present Continuous: CCQ contradiction?

The author states,"Don't use the new (target) grammar in your questions." but does use the TL in his/her CCQs:

"Is it happenING now?"
"Are they paintING now?"

Contradictory, no?

Target sentence: If I won the lottery, I'd buy a new car
Checking questions
-Have I won the lottery? No - do you see me jumping with joy, roaring up in a super new car, etc?
-Am I going to win the lottery? Probably not, and do I really need to, with this ELT racket? Covers me booze and smokes at least.
-Am I going to buy a new car? Probably not, my old Ferrari (a gift from mummah, and pappah) is still running OK.
-Has he got a lottery ticket? Maybe, but when do we ever see any wider context like that? "Hey, have you bought a lotto ticket yet, the rollover jackpot is now over £50 million!". Nice subject change, by the way (has the writer only just twigged that we should be talking about a 'he', as posing questions of oneself to others seems a bit weird even for an ELT classroom!).
-Is this real, or imaginary? Imaginary of course, what do you think this is, the real world? The students don't even know up from down anymore!
