Just use a 'clavier franais' and you can get all the and and even whenever you want.
But you risk hitting "q" when you need and "a" AZERTY beats QWERTY every time. |

Excuse me gentlemen, but getting back to the topic of the thread. My recruiter is Skyline. They have me working with AtlanticTravel out of DC for my visa. Atlantic Travel got my paperwork last Friday. I just got a call, my visa has been approved and the paperwork is on its way back to me. This is a work visa. Wow. I never expected it this soon. I haven't even given my notice for my present job. They want me ASAP, like a couple of days. I will have to give at least one week's notice, then I am out of here.
I work for an offshore surveying company, and we are struggling during this economy. So they will really not miss me. I could leave today and it would not be a problem. But I feel I need to give at least a week's notice.
Not paying rent for this month, that's for sure. |
Glad to hear you are getting a real work visa and that the Embassy has processed it already. The Saudi Embassy is known for not accepting some documents such as a police report without it being stamped, sealed and whatever to make it look official. Well, best of luck! Let us know how things progress. Oh, and make sure they pay for you flight!

The Houston Police department very kindly stamped and notarized my police report with a raised seal. |

Dear Colleagues,

On a Mac, under "Edit", you will find a category called "Special Characters"
(but no, the posters here aren't listed there.) Under "Punctuation", you will find the accents.
or, you can do as I did - just type the word "touche" into Google search and then copy from the results.

John
Dear WMTN,
While it is true that I did indulge in some "illegal controlled substances" back in the late 60s and early 70s (after, not before Vietnam - I was twenty-three in '66 when I was there) I am very glad that the Veterans Administration doesn't consider that to be relevant. The charge for the surgery (my co-pay, that is) would have been relatively very low (only about $1200,) but I'm still grateful that the government is picking up the tab instead.
On December 29th, I'll find out - by means of a blood test to measure my PSA level - whether the surgery was completely successful (if I get a "0" on the test, I'm golden - first time in my life I've hoped on a zero on any test,) but if not, then it's radiation time.
Stay tuned for further developments - assuming you give a tiny hoot.
Regards,
John
P.S. "Catch-22" is one of my three favorite comic/tragic contemporary novels, the other two being
1. "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole
2. "Handling Sin" by Michael Malone |
Dear JS,
Thanks.
I hope you score zero at the test this time and I do give a double hoot how you fare. Catch-22 is of course one of the best of our times. But Arthur Miller's 'All My Sons' is a perpetual haunt on the conscience, in the war context. (in the last two or three decades war has come to be the exclusive prerogative and compulsive pastime of America?) So many of our sons and daughters lost..
Thanks again for the reading ref.
Regards.

I have read almost all of Henry Sweet and he never mentions a 'grave' accent. |
I rather imagine, without reading your quoted post, that by "GRAVE" the person meant to use the word "GRAVE" pronounced Graa VAY for lack of a better way to write the word phonetically. There likely is a way on our PCs to write that symbol but I do not know it unless I used MS Word, created a document and then pasted it. That is entirely too much work for answering and posting here. |
Thank you Bill, Scot and JS for the phonetics. I am poor in French, couldn't get around the gender-based grammar, try as I did, in 82, respondez, s'il vous plait. (? )
Dear Bill,
Why do you feel compelled to reply someone without reading his post? Be a gentleman.
Regards.

I read the post I replied to in which the poster was, apparently, picking on the person who talked about the "grave accent" font. I can't find the original post the second poster was talking about. |

One confusing detail of the Saudi boards these days is that often people's replies refer to posts on other threads!! You practically need to take notes to keep up.

Is this what the Structuralists and Postmodernists call "Intertextuality" where to understand one text you have to be familiar with lots of others ?
I do not often stray far from the Saudi Board - with infrequent visits to neighbouring territories. |

Previous posting said, "This is a work visa. Wow. I never expected it this soon. "
I talked to Skyline today, December 11, 2009, and they told me that I would get a 90-day visitor visa, which I will have to renew every 90 days. That doesn't sound too good.
Note: I haven't even applied yet. I am working in Oman, teaching at a technical college. |

Yeah, that means you'd be on a NON work visa. You will not be able to travel freely in and out of KSA. You will not be able to open a bank account, and many other things that require an Iqama. You'll only get the Iqama on an Employment Visa. Just got mine today. So I'm back to the Magic Kingdom again. hehehe

I have also been offered a positon with Skyline, but am still deciding and have some questions. Seeing as you are a step ahead of me, would you mind if I pm you?
Oh right, did you apply for the job or did they approach you?
Yes sure, I don't mind, I'm hoping to get to know people in the same boat as me.[/quote]
I'm curious about how your experiences have gone with SGS. I have just started discussion a Saudi offer with them. What do you think of their services? Did you end up working for them? thanks! |

This thread is nearly a year old.
Coincidentally, I answered a Skyline advertisement, about this time last year.
I rarely use this website's PM.
Skyline recruits for several contractors. Search this website for the school(s) being offered. |

Ok, so I have finally read thru all ten pages of posts in this thread (thanks, wanna_teach for answering anyway). Skyline doesn't seem too bad. But I'm a little confused about the visa situation. Why are some people given 90 day visas and others given work visas right away? Is there even a reason? And in the case of a temporary visa, is it wise to start working that way, not knowing when a work visa will come thru?
And if you have a job in Oman, what are you doing trying to go to KSA? I worked in Oman for a year and a half, and though it wasn't perfect, I would go back in a heartbeat (instead of considering KSA offers) if I could get a job there. (I'm starting to think my employer blacklisted me for trying to get him NOT to steal my money. ) But being a woman, I guess the big distinction for me is more money and serious social restriction (KSA) vs decent money and relative social comfort (Oman). |
