Dear Nomad. You are so confused and confusing, while pretending to be such an expert. The 3 visas you refer to here:
"...temp work visas, work visit visas, and biz visit visas..."
are in fact only 2 visas. The fist two in your list are approximate terms for the same thing. |
I'm not confused; I just didn't assign a number to how many visas I was referring to because I know the names of these visas can be confusing. It's the actual process and requirements that make the visa type obvious.
The business visit visa is sometimes called a work visit visa. Same thing, same terms/conditions (i.e., does not grant the right to work or reside in KSA). The temporary work visit is a different type of visa because it requires a temporary work contract, which states, for example, American Joe Blow, skilled worker, is contracted to work for Mustafa and Sons in Riyadh from Jan. 1, 2013, until March 31, 2013, for the purpose of fixing a do-hicky on the thingamabob. Joe's temporary work visa will indicate it's valid from Jan. 1, 2013 to March 31, 2013 (Islamic calendar date equivalent). Joe is flown in, fixes the do-hicky and subsequently, blows out of the country back to the US no later than March 31. If he didn't finish the job and the company wants him to return, then a new temporary work contract will need to be initiated for a new temporary work visa (again with specific start/end dates) from the embassy in Joe's home country. It's also sometimes called a temporary work visit visa because it's the equivalent of a visit visa in that Joe is not eligible to establish residency or employment in the Kingdom; he's just there for a short time (AKA visit) to perform a specific function for a Saudi company (which mirrors what you quoted from Baker and Mckenzie and what I previously stated).
For a comprehensive list of visas and the required documents as well as processes, go the consular services link on the Saudi Embassy's US website. The instructions are clear. |

Only for those who don't want to read and understand.

Who are they and who cares what they say? The organization making the rules here is the Saudi government.
It doesn't matter what they or you or your recruiter or even the embassy calls them and even whether there are small variations of the theme.
Only one fact is important. They are not legal for teachers to live and work in Saudi Arabia. Anything else is nit picking. And one wonders why you are picking them. Are you a recruiter?

Dear Nomad, I knew you knew, but Slat and VS don't, and you are letting them slide.
Dear VS, B & M is probably the largest law firm in the world. READ. |

No, I didn't read their handbook because the visa types and processes are clear to me. Plus, I'm presently more interested in destroying the last of some dark chocolate ice cream. Besides, I already have an iqama for legit work and residency in the Kingdom; my posts are simply to help others cut through some of the confusion.

Huh? Letting them slide? For what, pray tell? In fact, I carefully followed their advice on these very forums half a dozen years back when I decided to change careers to go into teaching. I now try to pay it forward. Simple as that. As Johnslat said, he and VS "both admire good, honest posts that may help prevent unwary EFL job applicants from getting suckered into dreadful jobs." |

Hmm... I'm not an expert on these forums, but I act like one in real life... |

Dear Nomad,
You don't seem to understand that VS and Slat believe the business visa and the temp work visa are the same thing. I knew you knew they were different, in spite of your vague explanation. But they really don't get it. |

Dang you guys. Who knew what and when. Let's all just calm down. Who among us has been or knows someone who was arrested and/or aggressively deported (ambiguity intended) for teaching Angle-ish in the Kingdom of Left Turns from the Right Lane? I agree that it is illegal but so it a lot of things, things that are not penalized.
I would encourage others to get the iqama as I did, but for those without one offered and who need to make some money, don't consider a work whatever visit vatever visa a deal breaker. You may have a rough time or you may not. but a lot of people are willing to take that chance to make three times China money.
Side note: Companies will try and shaft you out of your end of contract bonus (half month salary for a full contract completed) by ending your service early and considering it you resigning and thus ineligible. Even if it because your visit visa expired or something. Be warned, for this and other reasons you'll be stressed and hate stuff. But you'll be working. |
