I know IH in Moscow asks for CELTA/Trinity but you never know. However, do note that other schools as well as the chain schools go in for visas. |

Not sure about St Petersburg, but unless you are unlucky and are dealing with a picky McSchool administrator, you should be able to pick up a full-time position with visa support. In Moscow, that seems to be the case, at least.
Best of luck! |
Awesome, that's more or less what I was hoping. I did apply to a few schools recently though, and I haven't heard back anything. Is there usually a long wait? Also, I think I'll be ok because I have some experience, but will my girlfriend be able to do it? |

Ha, interesting Mr Davis, local politicking. You must be in a small town. I've never heard of anything like that in Moscow and SPb.
Teaching on a Business Visa is an administrative offense -- two of those within a period of three years and you can (keyword "can") be denied reentrance for three years. I have NEVER heard of anybody having problems with this. So Mr Davis' tales of being barred for life are actually false, though he does seem to have some basis to claim they've been "tightening up" with regards to illegal employment practices, BUT in the probably small provincial town where he works.
Schools who hire illegally get fined RUB400.000 (from what I've heard). The employee holds little if any administrative responsibility in such cases.
As for Al, somebody will probably bite in due time. I got over on a Mc'Visa without TOEFL certs or experience, but quit after a few months because of poor working conditions (that's one risk of going the McSchool route). If you get sick of waiting, come over on a Business Visa and go from there. |

Oh dear, oh dear. It's TEFL, not TOEFL for teacher training... |

McSchools are geared for newly or indeed untrained teachers. Whether or not your girlfriend will be able to do the job is a very open question. I would say that she'll have problems at the beginning, as do all newbies. But hers will be larger given that she really should have some sort of training beforehand. |

If you don't hear back in a week, a follow up call may be helpful. Depends which 'manager' you get through to, though. Try for a DoS type person.
But even so, a week wouldn't be a long time in Russian EFL - except when they want something from you yesterday : ) |

Never bothered with any sort of certification. That would be poor working conditions also... |

Oh c'mon Sasha, you know just as well as anybody that working conditions outside the McEstablishment (and I mean privates) for a seasoned pro with TOEFL certs like yourself and a novice w/out certs like myself are pretty much the same. Don't be bitter! |

No, not bitter. But the conditions are not the same. Not at all. Not even for privates. |

A hint of elitism in your tone. That's new! And I'd beg the differ. Anyway, I don't mean to be snide. We all appreciate your experience and willingness to help and especially your fondness for all things Russian |
