Are there locked gates/curfew times enforced for foreign teachers in addition to students on campus?
The guy at the door goes to bed at 10. If I come back later, I have to wake him up. This is something I don't do too often, but occasionally, it's not a big deal.
Is there any no overnight guests clause or policy in your contract? More importantly- based on your experience/observations- Is it actually enforced for teachers living in on-campus apts?
Guests are supposed to 'sign in', but I have had several overnight guests, including bringing drunk girls back late, and they never sign in. Haven't heard anything about it. One of those Chinese things where they make a rule but never enforce it.
Does your school offer the option of housing allowance in addition to base salary of course, if you request off-campus housing (finding an apt without their assistance). If so, did you select the off-campus apt option?
Nope, live on campus or pay everything yourself.
Was your on-campus apartment different/worse than the one you were promised or shown pictures of when signing the contract?
Better. Has two bedrooms instead of one and nice furniture.
How many teaching hours per week?
Technically I'm contracted to 20, which actually means 15, since a 90 minute class counts as 2 hours. However, in the two years I've worked here, I've only taught that much for one semester. Right now I only teach 4 classes a week.
How many office/desk/prep hours per week?
0. Of course I prep my lesson, but it's not a formal thing I have to go in for or report.
Any clearly stated amount of non-teaching hours you must be at the school, stated in your contract?
No. Haven't done a single English corner or other event. Haven't been asked.
I don't get paid that much and I live in a tiny, remote town. So there are problems with this job. But for all the stuff you mentioned, it's fine. |
