For the vast majority of university positions they want 2-3 years of related teaching experience after:
MA in Applied Linguistics or ESL/EFL
There are a few Saudi employers who want an MA and a CELTA, but they are in the minority. |
This reflects my current position. Am I to take it that those employers that do require the MA + CELTA/TEFL are the choice/reputable employers in the region ? |
This region loves certs and credentials. It's safe to say if your relevant MA does not include a practical component, then seriously consider adding a CELTA/equivalent TEFL cert to confirm you've received supervised teacher training. Frankly, if the hiring decision is between a job candidate with a valid TEFL cert versus another equally-qualified one who lacks a cert, we know who's likely to get the position. Moreover, prospective employers may wonder why you never got a TEFL cert. That's not a question you want to hear if you make through to the interview stage. |
