| Thanks, Sicklyman, I don't know where I'll be based. I'll just be assigned somewhere if I get the job. It's an al-Hoty contract (Aramco subcontract). I've read that the subcontracted positions for ARAMCO have a considerably different situation than the direct hires, and that they do not usually live on the ARAMCO compounds (whatever that means). No dependents; coming alone. I'd probably try to find a cheaper place if the rents are high, as the purpose of the move is to save up. I guess I'm also fishing for general info like what you said about Bahrain. I don't have any idea of how 'compound' or 'off-compound' life would differ, other than the general idea of a gated community of expats vs. a regular saudi urban neighborhood. |
I guess you are unaware that when you go for the interview, you can tell them where you want to work and then make sure it is on the offer sheet you sign when you get a position. This means you have some control over where you are going to be located and can do some homework before you interview and come over.
Aramco have multiple locations all over Saudi in the major cities as well as the back of beyond places (some listed here.) If you do not stipulate where you want to be, it may be unlikely that you'll get Dhahran (the only location that would enable you to even consider living in Bahrain). But some of the out of the way locations would have a much lower cost of living, less traffic, more local colour etc. It all depends on what you want your experience in Saudi to consist of. Bahrain will give you a higher standard of living but you will need a car and are likely to spend more money if you live there.
Rents in Khobar/Dhahran are around R2-3,000 for a decent one-bed furnished place per month and this usually includes utilities and Internet. If the purpose of your trip is to save and you have no dependents you should not be thinking about a compound as these are not going to help you achieve your purpose. Besides, there is a very nice sports facility attached to work here in Dhahran which you can use for free 6 days a week. This goes a long way to making up for not having a compound pool/gym.
You should also factor in transport. There is no public transport other than taxis. Many people get taxis to and from work or lease a car (rent to buy). Calculate somewhere around R2000 a month for one of those options.
Aramco have their own housing/beaches/facilities for direct hire employees. Even just visiting them is difficult, let alone living there. |

| When I worked at Aramco (contractor) I coached football in the evenings and they gave me a pass into the compounds which gave me free rein to use the facilities. |
