3) Inm issued an authorization letter, in which I had 15 days to schedule an appointment at the consulate here in the US and present the letter |
How was getting the letter to you, so you could present it, done? |

They gave it to my boss, who e-mailed it to me. |

So whoever was handling your paperwork at the university had to physically go to the INM office in Oaxaca City multiple times? |

I'm wondering if the difficulty in getting the visa is going to cause employers to seek non-native-speaking instructors. That would be a shame. |

15 times! And how far is the university from Oaxaca City? Who had to go - the head of the English dept. or someone from administration or HR?
I'm wondering because the university I work at in Oaxaca is going to be hiring some more teachers this summer. We're about a 6-7 hour bus ride from Oaxaca City so I'm really not sure how we're going to do this visa filing if it requires multiple trips to/from INM in Oaxaca City. |

This is a golden time for Mexican teachers in this respect. Less foreign competition in theory should raise wages and make jobs easier to find. But, Mexico doesn't often follow the logic of supply and demand so maybe not.
IB schools must have a certain number of foreign teachers to keep their IB standing. They'll simply have to bite the bullet and do the extra work. Or at least their lawyers do. Bonanza time for lawyers in this as well. |

Basil,
I think it is time that all the system, especially your far flung selves, start making better use of the office staff at the Oaxaca office. in 2005 I was in Michoacan when my renewal was up and I sent all my documents to the office there and someone submitted them for me so that I only had to go back to Oaxaca when my renewal was ready to be picked up. (I was technically working in Oaxaca, since I was on a paid sabatical).
Since the changes we have only hired foriegners who already had FM3s. And only have one open position for the fall. |

They said my boss could not submit the papers because he did not have the necessary credentials, so someone from hr had to do it. But my boss somehow got the credentials needed to submit the papers so they let him do it. |

With SUNEO employing dozens of foreign teachers, and many universities recruiting for the fall, this visa situation is going to become an issue over the coming weeks. Can’t see many jumping for joy at the prospect of 15 visits to the lovely people at INM |

The Oaxaca office was really backed up in April-May-June, but several renewals put in across the course of those three months all came through about the same time with some taking 3 months, others 2 and one just a couple of weeks.
Remember there is another INM office in Huatulco, so the coast and the istmo go there rather than Oaxaca City.
But YEAH, not going to be fun.
You reddevil might be interested in knowing that a spousal visa aparently now comes with the right to work so that suddenly makes some candidates a lot more attractive. |

That will be welcome news for some people! It’s the first time I heard anyone mention it. Do you have any more details – one person’s experience, or more than one, etc.? |

I'd be interested in hearing more about this too. I've been pouring over the INM forms for weeks now and never noticed this detail. |

Just to be clear,
I meant people who are spouses of MEXICANS. Not your spouse has an FM3 and you are also a foreigner.
IF your spouse is Mexican (or child or parent) you can now go immediately to permanet resident. Even if you have never been to Mexico before. |

Wow, the fit is really hitting the shan right at this moment as foreigners pour into Mexico for the start of the school year. I'm hearing stories from schools top to bottom on immigration confusion, people having to leave and come back, clueless lawyers, and general mayhem in getting people sorted out for this school year.
Insider tip of the year: if you have your work visa already and are in Mexico, right now is the time to land a job and negotiate a salary on your terms. |
