This is China. There is no way to get from the morning to the evening without dealing with excessive bureaucracy.
Your biggest problem is that you would be competing with Chinese nationals on their own turf. You will be a goldfish in a tank of piranhas, with a few sharks thrown in for good measure. You will likely be seen as 'muscling in', or at least trying to, and 'coming over here and stealing our jobs'. A sadly familiar refrain in many countries where immigrants try to make a go of things. This is just my opinion of course. China is a notoriously difficult place for non Chinese nationals to do business in, especially small businesses.
I would suggest that you come over, do your day job, do some privates, and give it a year. If you still think that it's worth registering a web site etc. after that then do it. Nothing is more important when setting up a new business than doing a bit of market research. So many businesses fail because people have a 'good idea', then realise that either lots of other people already had the same idea, or that it was only a good idea in their head, and failed to work out in reality.
Good luck with it though. |

I wouldn't register a business.
This is no more than doing privates - just extending your marketing 'reach'. |

"...If the SEO repeated the name of the OP a few times at appropriate places ie beginnings of site paras, it would come up pretty readily on Google..."
What you say makes sense.
Would it work that easily on Baidu? I'm familiar with Google and its ease of SEO but not with Baidu. I have known very few Chinese who even know about Google. |

Good point about Baidu.
I have a website and my developer optimised it for Baidu as well as Google.
Not sure how to query the analytics to see how much traffic is coming via Baidu as against Google. |

Wow guys, a lot of great information! Thank you.
I actually did marketing/copywriting as my day job back in the States, so I'm comfortable with building a business organically. Of course, in China, it's completely different and everything I would do to market a business in America I'd have to differently here. That's what I would have to mostly research. |

| One more tip: learn to use QQ, Weibo and Baidu. |

I still feel that the website is/should be seen as an extension of the business card.
People going to the site would do so by typing in the url, not searching 'English lessons ' or similar. They would do so to obtain further information over and above what could be included on a card.
It takes a lot to get into the 1st page of results in most searches to do with teaching English.
Be upfront about prices for individuals and groups.
This will get you enquiries from people who have selected themselves as able to pay. |
