What is the Foreigner's List?

I can´t remember the exact name anymore, but it was something like Registro de Extranjeros, and I remember it being a requirement to register at Migration at one time, upon getting your first work visa. Now that you mention it, I don´t remember if it still was the last time I took someone to Migration, I was just there to translate and didn´t pay too close attention otherwise.

When I got my FM3 in 2008, it included permission to work as a free-lance English teacher. I didn't have to do anything like sign a "Registro de Extranjeros" as far as I can remember.

The RNE Registro Nacional de Extranjeros is(was?) not for all foreigners, just ones commited to Mexico. You used to get on it when you did one of the following things:

Became an immigrant. (FM2 status)
Married a Mexican. (any status)
Parented a Mexican. (any status)

There was a fee for being added to the list and you couldn't do any of the above and opt to stay off the list (I tried Wink )

Now who knows.

I picked up my new "green card" and tried asking questions about things like--is there a limite to the amount of time I can be out of the country, I'm going on sabbatical soon. And the friendly INM man wouldn't answer any question. A colleage did the same a month earlier and also got the run-around. 8 months in and they still don't know what is going on.

Thanks, MotherF, I knew I hadn´t dreamed that such a list existed, haha, it had just been a while so I was fuzzy on the details.

That wasn't true a few years ago in Mexico City, but they like to change the rules just to keep us on our toes! Wink

I would have to swing by and check again, but the last CURP I registered was for my son about 15 months ago, and I did it at an INEGI office where they had a desk to handle CURP registries. INEGI is a statistics bureau of the federal government.

But your son is not a foreigner so it's different for him. My kids got theirs through the local civil registry office.

Originally way back when, my bank got my CURP for me when they signed me up for an AFORE, but then one time, also fairly way back when but at least 4 years after the bank told me my CURP, I was at immigration and they said, "Oh, and you're CURP was wrong, so here is the correct one. And handed me an original CURP paper." And since that time all our teachers have gotten theirs through INM.

True, good point. This has me wondering now, so I'll make it a point to ask next time I'm near a registro civil or the same INEGI office.
