No one seems to be clear on whether to get apostille or authentication. I'm leaning more towards authentication since viet didn't join The Hague apostille treaty.
As to giving up you originals, don't. You may show them the originals, but always give them copies so they can RED stamp the crap out of 'em. |

Showing my ignorance here, but how does one get documents authenticated? I thought apostille covered everything. |

Well, you can google it and find out for yourself without me rambling on. It seems almost everyone in Vietnam is working without WP, or some or a few employers can do some bargaining under the table with viet officials to acquire WPs. No one is saying it, but I sense that's what's happening at the moment. |

I'd be wary of any advice you receive from Ramen. He's not even in Vietnam and has little idea of what he's talking about.
To answer your question, you need your original degree and any certificates to be apostilled if you want a work permit. While some bottom of the barrel teaching places won't do the paper work for you, many of the better ones will, and they will ask you for these documents. No need to give the school your original copies. Just give them the apostilled paper work. |

I took my original BA, TEFL cert and criminal check to the US Consulate. They add an affidavit to the front, staple it all together and stamp an eagle across the edges of the docs. The affidavit states that the attached items are true and correct (you write this), they make you raise your hand and swear they're true, then they emboss the aff. Take this down the street for the VN Foreign Affairs to add their sticker and stamp to the affidavit, confirming that the US rep is real. Then take this package across the street for VN translations/copies. This is where you ask for multiples if working at more than one place. A few days later you pick up your stapled copied bunches, english copies in front, VN in back, all complete with red stamps aplenty. These are what get handed to the school, originals safe with you. |

Easy as ABC - I just gave my originals to HR sat back and got them back in a couple of days. But, yes, it is as simple as that. |

I don't know about before but the sense I get is that the govt is clamping down on "tourist" teachers and more reputable (read: organized) schools are pushing for a work permit. VUS in particular has a policy of terminating workers who don't get one within three months. Demonietto describes the exact process I am going through. |

Since when did it become a teacher's responsibility? Surely you must mean to come up with the documents. And how could an organisation hire someone if they haven't seen these documents? This would (sorry, does) reflect badly on all if (when) VUS started firing staff three months after screening.
I haven't even set foot in the 2 countries and schools that are already issuing me a visa and work permit. Why wait three months? Ahh, yeah, the three month visa scam - This works both ways sonny.
I don't see any change. |

Very interesting point. Can you explain a bit more about the three month visa scam? Is it where you're given conditional visa only with 3 month contract and given another one after you do another visa run out of the country? |

I think it becomes a very complex issue. Standardisation just doesn't exist, so it is quite difficult to ascertain or apportion blame. Needless to say everyone is covering their own asses. Nevertheless, I love it when corporate shiny white asses are left hanging out in the wind.
Do you know how much pressure academic managers are under in these places? Jeezz, it is a nightmare trying to get and retain teachers. I will never do it again. |

So the desperation of getting and retaining teachers hasn't changed, eh?
I may have to turn down an offer of 'corporate white ass position' in saigon after checking out the place. Since I'm in no hurry, I may just look for subject teaching. |
