that is a pickle, isn't it?

how can we compare the fruits if we have to pretend apples don't exist, but the alternative is for apple fights to break out?

That depends. If you include Mexico in your comment (though Mexico is in North America), life in Mexico City is great but definitely not laid-back. Also, the OP wants to be able to save around $500 US a month, and that's highly unlikely to be the case for the average job in Mexico.

Good point, Isla.

Here's another nice dream!

Imagine that you worked for an evil intelligence agency and wanted to disclose information about a multiplicity of crimes carried out by that agency. Where would you then escape to after you had alerted the world to the baseness of said agency? After having exposed the hypocrisy of its empty rhetoric about individual freedom, eh?

Welcome to Russia! Where the People will protect you from vindictive, global bully organisations which are enraged after having been caught with their pants down.

Russia! Land of the truly free! All welcome. Even EFL teachers : )

Haha. That was a crack up. PS- You guys who are arguing with Mr Droogie do realise that he or she is taking the piss? But still kind of serious too...

Sadly enough he seems to believe some of it, except for when it comes to serious medical care.

Sasha,

I can pass messages along for you, but just because two people disagree with you doesn't make them one and the same person.

I recommend Buraidah or Qassim in the Nejd. Brick wall principle. After that, everywhere is nice.

All present and accounted for in the Czech Rep, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg (to my direct knowledge). Cherry on top: high-level and strongly motivated students who actually use English frequently for work and travel. No need for 'edutainment' teaching methods here (biggest plus for me).

Yes, nothing special in that list from GA at all, for many countries. However, there is a glaring ommission from the list. The conspicuous absence being of course high level learners who progress. One can reasonably expect beginners to progress to advanced levels where Spiral and I are based. While this is far from being uniquely Russian or Eastern European, it is highly prevalent. Much more so than other regions on the globe, where you can just expect a sea of blank uncomprehending faces staring back at you in your depressing classroom, regardless of the official student level.

Perhaps it is strange to link learner quality to quality of life. It is just one factor of many, true. But for teachers, surely this should be a priority? If it is so for you, then come to Russia!

Of all of the Asian countries I've heard that Japan and Singapore are probably the cleanest, safest and nicest, all things considered and if one can find a TEFL job there.

Depending on what job you do in Japan, it can be super relaxed. A lot of desk time without a lot of responsibility. Teaching - just follow a textbook and get timid students to speak English.

There are beautiful women who at least in larger cities are easy to meet.

The money isn't what it was even though you can live a pretty comfortable life with lots of delicious food.

You are still pretty much welcomed many places as the exotic other although the rock star days are fading.

Salaries are falling, but there are still jobs here.

The population is growing old.

I'm not doing a good job at sales am I?

Beautiful mountains and sea! Most of the country will never be touched by radioactive leakage.

Where else can you live beside live volcanoes and laugh with friends about "snowing" ash?
