To give an example re Sashadroogie's point about transport.
I live in a town about 240 miles south of Moscow (i.e. roughly the distance from London to Manchester). There is an overnight train, which takes about 7 or 8 hours, or coaches in the day which take about 7 hours. So you can't go for a weekend in the way that you would in the UK (I've tried).

Thanks for the replies.

I found out from the school they want 800 roubles to register me each time I need to be registered.

On the price of beer, I think it's important to note I am not going to live in Moscow. I heard the 80r place from a friend who had lived in Russia for a time, and it was apparently a place very popular with students. I'm guessing 150r will be more usual?

So do you think a weekend trip to Moscow is out of the question? Overnight train to Moscow on the Friday night, stay in Moscow Saturday night, and then travel back by train on the Sunday night. Quite exhausting, but I have done 5 days of work with around 12 hours sleep before!

It is not impossible, assuming you do not live in Vladivostok. Just don't expect to wander around fresh as a rose after overnight travel.
