2 years ago there was a nationwide recruitment drive by the Malaysian government through the agency TeachAway. Pay for PGCE + MA TESOL was around US $3,000 a month + accom + benefits.
The variety (and number) of jobs open to MA TESOL holders who didn't posses a PGCE was much more limited.
I've seen jobs advertised at the EU in Brussels for €70,000 for MA TESOL + PGCE .. and everyone knows you need a PGCE for Brunei ... which is a more gentle way to make some money than the Gulf. |

Thanks TwinCentre, I appreciate the input. What was your subject? It's a little surprising what you say but each person's experience is different I guess. In my case I'd like to apply to the HK NET secondary programme and although you can get into it without a PGCE having it gives you a better chance. On top of that your salary can increase and increase whereas without a PGCE there's a cap, so the PGCE here is a definite plus. Additionally in England I can get a bursary for the PGCE that would not only cover the uni fees, but also rent and living expenses due to a lack of modern foreign language teachers and thus the government are offering incentives. So, essentially it means I get a PGCE for free, so why not do it!

PC Parrot, was that a particular PGCE subject such as English or just a PGCE in anything?
70,000 euros seems quite a lot. And the salary for Malaysia looks quite good! |

The British Council liked me having it, but didn't reward me for it, I got £30 more a month from NOVA (remember them?) in Japan for it, apart from that...all I ever heard was 'DELTA, DELTA, DELTA'.... |
Indeed.
From the BC's website:

Teachers with PGCE training and classroom experience are very useful to us. More and more of our students are school-age children coming for English lessons with us, and a lot of our teacher training involves working in state schools with local EFL teachers. But hardly any of our jobs are for teachers who exclusively teach Young Learners. We need TEFL specialists who can teach adults at all levels as well as children, and who are familiar with the course books and common TEFL exams such as FCE, CAE and IELTS. Unless you have a PGCE (or similar) in TEFL, you will need to do a CELTA or similar training course to qualify for most of our vacancies.
In Hong Kong we employ teachers who only teach Young Learners or Very Young Learners. For these posts we consider teachers with a PGCE in primary or a PGCE in MFL, and we don’t insist on a TEFL qualification. You would need experience of teaching EFL to children, though.

You would have access to jobs in such places as Malaysia, Brunei, and even with the EU in Brussels, that people without a PGCE would not...

Sorry for hijacking this thread but I'm curious to find out more about this. What kind of jobs exactly are they, and where are they advertised?
I'm currently doing a PGCE in MFL and I've got CELTA and DELTA (Module 2 only so far) plus a MA in Interpreting and Translation Studies. Any suggestions where to look for the above-mentioned jobs. I thought I was pretty familiar with the EU but have never heard of these vacancies before. |

You'll see in my post I gave more specific info about the Malaysia jobs because I was able to remember the specifics. The recruiter is big in the Gulf too, so it was easy to remember.
The EU job, however, was just an ad I saw 4 or 5 years ago when I had cause to visit the regular job sites - which site it was I can't remember.
I doubt it's a job that is regularly advertised. Why would it need to be? I was as surprised as anyone to see it advertised in the first place. Perhaps the ad I saw was the beginning of the programme. I don't know.
I do know that some lucky 'person' has/had one of Europe's best paid TEFL jobs. |

The post in Brussels would have been advertised to comply with the hiring laws, but in almost every case, the bodies responsible for advertising such jobs already have a shortlist of (highly qualified) candidates in hand, who have local connections and language skills.
I worked in the region for almost a decade and know people who have such jobs. To see such an ad by no means signals that there are numerous or frequent openings - and the single post advertised is likely to already be filled in reality.
These ads are really placed just to comply with the law in almost every case. |
