So did you inform him of the requirement for receiving an extended tourist visa (after canceling an RP) and the possibility tht he may have to prove income via a bank statement.

Thank for all the advice. Since I have received various stories from my hr dept. and feedback from this forum, I have decided to stay here in China. Fortunately, the TEFL provider will be holding a course here in Southern China next month. I'll attend that course and then find work shortly after.
