Funnily enough, I think they provided the official letter but forgot the informal one.

At a guess, your company (which sound like a right shower of ..) have misunderstood the invitation letter, which isn't just a "yeah we'll employ the laowai" letter from the company, but a confirmation of invitation from a relevant government department.

There is no informal one. In case they do think it's like davelister said, this is what it should look like. Maybe you do have it, but were expecting more of a 'letter' looking type of document?

Working on a tourist visa is not good. Do your co-workers have the right visa?

I'm pretty sure now that this is the missing piece of the proverbial jigsaw.

Unfortunately, I couldn't hang around in the hope that the company would perform a U turn and actually help me.

I flew to Phnom Penh this morning with a back of an envelope plan of finding a few hours and ticking along for a while.

My brain feels likes it's been through a blender, I only have 2 changes of casual clothes and my bank balance took a pounding from Hong Kong, but I may as well give it a shot.

It was probably a rash decision induced by the profound stress I was under. Laughing

Sometimes you just gotta chuck it all and clear your brain out. Price of an education.

actually you can feel free to blame the OP. check posting history.
he chose not to abide by the "obvious flaws" in the chinese system,
and apparently began working on a tourist visa. seems to have done
the same thing in thailand. makes me wonder if he'll shell out the
extra $5 to get an ordinary (business/work) visa in cambodia.

I'm fully aware of the irony engulfing my predicament.

I chose the HK route to save me time and cash and, well, it's ended up costing me more of both.

But many people pull of the HK run without any issues if their company are in any way competent. I still feel I've been a tad unlucky in all this.

I have good news for you: I did fork out the fiver for the O visa.

I got that, cdf, but know another FT from GZ. He made his HK visa run and had no problems. So I think OP's school is at least partly to blame.

Regardless, I now know to get a Z-visa in my home country or....not go at all.

Perhaps, but blame him for what? Taking a chance? He knew the consequences, took a chance, and it did not work out for him. He may have asked for a little advice, but I did not see him asking for any sympathy. I don't know what the odds are, but others have done the same thing successfully.

I like your posts, choudoufu, but you know, everyone who comes over here, even someone who is 100% legal, is taking a chance, what with all of the upfront expenses. We all do our best to look before we leap, but if it does not work out, and you need to bail, you will be out at least the cost of an RT plane ticket, as it is not always easy to move to another school.

There is a really nice hotel in PP that rents a room for $300, or less, a month.
I sent you a PM.

Just curious, is it that easy to set-up in Cambodia? Do you need to show proof of onward travel when you fly-in?

No proof of onward travel. You can pay an extra $5 for a visa that is renewable for one year.
I checked out PP a few years ago. At that time classes typically paid $10 an hour with zero benefits. I do not want to teach 100 classes a month for only $1000 and no benefits.

I agree, but you know what they say, any port in a storm, which was the OP's situation. I was just curious.

I know the pay is low and there is no benefits package, but this is sort of an emergency landing.

I want to thank everyone on here for the support and information I've received.
My situation is pretty grim, but I could be a lot worse.

I'm going to take a few days off to try and clear my head before I begin my job hunt.

If anyone knows of any useful websites for finding work in Phnom Penh, please post them in this thread.

Well, your saga got me curious and I have been reading the Cambodia forum for the last hour. Seems like there are some good tips there. Good luck...and keep us posted on how it works out......

That's a great forum actually - not heavily moderated, but at the same time not filled with trollish jackasses, so it stays relatively informative but still remains fun. I also posted there a lot years ago when I was thinking of moving to Cambodia, however like rogerwilco I just couldn't really justify the expense and hassle of moving there for 9 or 10 buck an hour jobs. I couldn't imagine heading there with little savings and relying on that. I have a lot of respect for ESLers there who manage to make it work though. Seems like there's a lot more competition there these days for jobs, too which will contribute to keeping the salaries in the toilet.

Nothing has changed in PP. Don't forget Cambodia has LOT's of UNPAID public holidays. Also prices for most things are actually in US Dollars. PP has NO transport infrastructure, unless you want to bike/motobike yourself around the city, so that will quickly add up. Going outside after dark/9PM means you are taking some chances.

I don't knock on a place easily, but not sure what redeems PP?
