Got a pretty nice offer from a University.
Because of good qualifications they accepted my bargain of 8500 instead of their initial 5500. Teaching is only 10 hours.

Now, when reading the unsigned contract I found out that it is only a 1-term contract.

Perhaps due to the increase in expected payouts they shorten the contract so as to facilitate a replacement at a lower cost in the near future.

Got to agree with Billy on this one. They need you now and are willing to pay more than they prefer. They want an easy out if they find a cheaper FT. Otherwise, they'd try to sell you on the year contract.

As for half contracts, those have been around a long, long time. Schools would push for a year because FTs were scarce. The smart choice was to work one semester and see if you want to renew. Some FTs have careers in their home countries while other FTs get sick or call it quits. Some mills have offered work visas for 2 - 4 months and would negotiate schedules. For my first mainland job in the early - mid 00's the school paid for my stay in HK as well as the work visa to the mainland, short term contract.

The fact that your school was willing to negotiate means, to me, they are probably a school worth working with. A school that offers refuses to negotiate on anything (of which there are many nowadays), should be a warning. I don't mean being unrealistically demanding. A good employer will try to work with you if you've got the goods.

yes. happy ending. but.

op is not a native speaker. op has an austrian passport. op likely cannot
get a work visa to teach engrish. op will be teaching irregally for one
semester (unless school is raided, and op deported).

then what?

I question some of what is considered fact round these here parts ..... sounds like a whole "lotta" if's going on....I would say tht all that you have mention is not much of a factor in accepting or rejecting this deal... perhaps their initial indication to barter could be used to gain the proper paperwork ... all in all, I wouldn't let a visa stand in my way of one term employment....

Actually they just answered and they will organize my Z-visa.

In my case I don't like to stay only half a year in a new place. That is about the time I am just starting to get used to the place and then boom, I already have to leave? I prefer at least 1 year, get to know people - understand the system, finding privates, and other opportunities for me as an artist.

So i am hoping that out of the many could-be-scenarios it is not the one where they take me with a high salary for 1 term and try to replace me with a cheaper FT as soon as they found one.

I was offered a high salary per month from one school, but they wouldn't pay me during the summer months. They would also only offer 5,000 for airfare.

Instead I opted for a school that offered a bit less but will pay full pay during the summer months. They are also giving me double the airfare that the first school offered.

Sounds like you chose the opposite benefit package to me...though the end result will be the same.

Have you contacted foreign teachers already at their school? I find their responses very telling. Perhaps they could answer your questions regarding the one-semester contract?
