This issue is not the same in Saudi... and there are hundreds of professors and teachers of various sub-continental background. They will know from your name and photo, so I don't really see how playing around with your photo will change anything. If the employer is looking for a lily-white Westerner, they will already exclude you - and you should probably consider yourself lucky. BUT, most will be more focused on your CV, your accent, and your passport.

Oh Please rollingk!
I read about the usage of the n-word related to KSA on this forum, but never heard about it in reality. However, I have heard much maligned things against the South Asians (Thai,Philippines). Sacked and then reinstated!
As for speaking with a British accent and getting a low salary, just because of the colour of ones skin- I can assure you that some of these teachers are getting paid more than 'white' skinned ones.
Oh and also I've heard typical cockney accents in KSA and they're doing great! |

I was talking about the distinct brand of English so common among Indian nationals and immigrants, an English much related to Victorian era English. No one has mentioned British accents, Cockney or otherwise. That would be nonsense. |

What era are you living in?
Who has ever heard what Victorian English sounds like- and I travel to India and Pakistan a lot. Yes, there is a certain brand of English spoken there, that is peculiar to that region, but overall the English that is spoken is on a par with good English. Listen to the Asian reporters from BBC and various other channels and business people.
Plus the teachers who are of sub-continent background speak 'proper' English. Is that what you're alluding to? |

I was speaking from my experience working for a short while in India. Actually, the trainees I worked with in Chennai may have on average been better speakers than many subcontinental teachers I've encountered in KSA.
The "proper" English you speak of is only proper if the rules of pragmatics are observed. The world has moved on a bit since Victoria's time. Also, writing and speaking have different requirements in this regard.
Candles, sorry if I somehow tripped over delicate sensibilities. People will believe what they wish in the end anyway. |

Not a criticism, but the Indian English dialect does preserve many details of the BrEng brought to their shores under Victoria. Not so much the 'sound,' but the vocabulary. Interesting thesis topic...

The mere fact that you are thinking of tinkering with your photo in order to enhance your chances of getting a job in Saudi Arabia, suggests that you lack the kind of confidence that you will need in order to succeed in that country, assuming that you are ever offered a position there.
Racism exists in every country on planet Earth, and you had better quickly get accustomed to that simple fact. In applying for a job, you should emphasize your academic qualifications, your experience and whatever relevant advantages that you might bring to the position.
Evolution ensured that people appear in a variety of shapes and colours, with a wide diversity of facial characteristics. Stop worrying about silly sociological constructs that naive people attach to facial features. Life is short. You could be dead tomorrow.

Actually I use the word 'perusal' is that not allowed then? If I was a lawyer I'd use ' I'd beg to differ'.....Sire! There you go- good old fashioned Victoria/Elizabethan English. |
