Yes another point is to get a good salary as Mexico is not as cheap as you think. Some things are just about as much as Canada or the US.

"I am curious as to what you think is a good salary in Guadalajara. it is not easy to save money in Mexico, especially in places like Guadalajara and Monterrey. "

.................... do you think that 21 000 pesos a month is enough to survive and save money?

21,000 pesos per month is an excellent salary. You should be just fine.

As inmexico said, that certainly is an excellent salary for Mexico. You didn't say if that amount was net or gross, but even if it was gross (take almost a third of it away for taxes,) it's still very good. If that's a 40-hour work week, that's a little over 130 pesos per hour. If that's a relatively normal salary for EFL teachers in Guadalajara, I'd say stick with that city. Here in Merida where I live, an EFL teacher would be doing very well to earn 80 pesos per hour, and most schools offer between 30-60 pesos per hour.

I'm not sure how it works in Guadalajara. At the schools in the city where I live, anything less than a 40-hour work week is part-time employment, and many consider 45-48 hours per week as full-time. In other words, many (most?) full-timers work 5 and a half or 6 days per week. Not the best work schedule for someone who wants to do a bit of traveling while here . . . or have much of a life away from the school, for that matter.

Bottom line, if a high salary is your top priority while teaching in Mexico, grab that job in Guadalajara, because I don't think you'll find a lot of other places in this country that will offer you a higher salary than that.

Just this morning I talked to another traveller here in Bogota who also thinks Asia is more interesting than Latin America but on the other hand if you have a good salary offer....maybe later. Go with your gut.

Yeah: I know my comment wasn't too helpful but hell, it's not my decision to make . I don't really like Taiwan although I'm in my fourth year here but I'm not here for the scenery. It's a case of show me the money............I'd rather be in Thailand.

Yeah, I've travelled in Mexico and liked travelling there. However personally if I wanted to teach I'd go to a smaller town..............like Campeche or somewhere else in the Yucatan region.

If you got ASIA in your head.. you should at least visit it and check it out. Otherwise youll be obsessed about it even after youve settled and taken the Mexico job.

I love both places - Latin America and Asia. Tough choice. Asia can be exotic if you are traveling around in southeast asia. But just day-to-day living, its different feeling. Maybe youd still get the rush for a few months even just with working. But itll wear away and then all the other factors and the reality of the place is there.

As others said.. China would be good if you want low hours and lots of free time while making a salary you can enjoy locally (but not enough to take international travel trips on). China is not nearly as exotic as you might think though. Well, if youve never been to Asia.. maybe it still could be for awhile.

Mm.. sounds like you have Asia on the mind.. and particularly China. Id go for that one. After the experience you can always try for Mexico.

(If it were me right now, Id go for Mexico.. but Ive spent a lot more years in Asia.. and just 10 months in South America.. so always thinking of those South America teaching days that I at times long to go back to).

Thanks to everyone for their advice and input. After weighting the options carefully, I have decide to go to Guadalajara, Mexico this August.

Thanks again
