They are valued but most foreign teachers in Japan don't have them and the packages on offer are not enough to attract PhD holders to Japan.

There are more and more vacancies which say "PhD preferred" and then quote a salary range which means they are not likely to attract such a candidate.

Some masters holders I know are now undertaking PhDs because that seems to be the future of the job market in Japanese universities. One foreign full-timer I know has started one as she was put under pressure by her Japanese colleagues as she was the only person in the department without one.

That is all well and good but the reality is most of these PhD holders will just be teaching English conversation, academic writing and TOEIC to low to intermediate level students. That hardly needs a PhD! How depressing!
