Dalian Merry Time!
I was in Dalian for five weeks in the summer of 2001. Was a great while ago but I really liked Dalian and enjoyed my time there. I would be interested in going back for a longer period of time if I got a decent work set-up.
Warm regards,

I'm in a similar position as ben.detw.
If anyone has any more information on what it's like teaching here, it would be great. I have heard good things so far. |

On another thread there's mention that FT accom at DMU is no longer in the 'Pink Building' but in new purpose-built facilities elsewhere on-campus.
Apparently there were problems with leaks or faulty aircon or similar in the new apartments.
That said, a new student dorm that opened in 2004/05 was just about uninhabitable after 4/5 weeks, according to my students.
Laundry equipment ie washers and irons faulty.
I think quality control is along the lines of 'let the tenants tell us what's wrong'. It takes a month or two to sort out problems.
The key thing in any accom in the north is south facing windows.
I had more job satisfaction at a 2nd tier vocational than at a tier 1 uni and no difference in money. |

Many thanks for the tip. I do got me one of those M.A. thingies. I may stay in the Four Rivers another year, but when I look to move I may have to give SURREY JV/DUFE ("Duffy") a look. Cheers again.

I taught in DL 2004/2005 of which 3 semesters at DMU.
I went back on a visit about 2 years ago hence my comments elsewhere about new pool.
I've just posted about an update on teacher accom at DMU as I regard these forums as collaborative.
There are almost no posts from people that are current or recent teachers so even slightly helpful posts from old fat guys and might be a lifeline to someone scratching for information.

mr.b does have a point.......bro, you're right there. how hard could it
be to either meet the fao, or, jinkies(!) locate one of the current
teachers? get some valid, current, up-to-date information?
you can't rely on mr.s whose info is a decade old.
things change quickly in our china.
i taught at one uni in kunming three years ago. sure, i could tell you
how it was then....but now? kunming (and the uni for all i know) then
and kunming now are two very different realities. |
How's the climate in kunming? Just curious. Summer prob hot and humid like elsewhere, but I read winter is warm and dry with pleasant weather? Much of eastern asia can have crappy weather for a few months a year and then get nailed in winter. So, I'd be curious about this Kumning place due to it's mountainous location.
Also, how does Dalian seem as it's near the sea? |

the kunming, she be dry. not so humid at 2000 meters. your clothes
will dry on the line in half an hour.
winter isn't exactly warm...there are some cool nights, and they get
the occasional dusting of snow, always melts by noon. |

I taught briefly at DMU from August 2013 until October, and the university was very cooperative in allowing me to leave, without cancelling my RP, before the expiration of my contract. For personal reasons (no fault of the university) it was no longer possible for me to continue teaching there.
On the positive side: brand new two-bedroom apartment with excellent new university-supplied computer ... huge high-res monitor:)
Could take light rail five or six stops to Xinghai Beach (don't miss the Beer Festival in progress now)!!
Congenial colleagues. One woman has been there about 7 years and is over 65; she loves it.
Salaries around the 7-8.5 k range, not bad for university.
On the negative side:
Classrooms about a 20 minute walk from faculty housing.
No offices. No access to free copying service.
Bus 10 service possible to classrooms, but often buses were late or too crowded.
No faculty dining facilities - cheap food/beer available in crowded student/construction worker cafes.
Perpetual dust storm caused by heavy building construction.
Some classes were all men - naval engineers ... a tricky situation for a conversational English class. Few women ... I believe they were only allowed to study maritime law.
Note: No active English department head, so you're very much on your own ... your class will probably never be observed. Some like this and some don't.
After I left DMU I used this forum to find a possible replacement for me ... I was (and remain) very grateful for their kind treatment and understanding of a difficult personal situation.
Hope this helps,
-HDT

When I was there (DMU) the teacher accom was 6 or 7 minutes walk from the main teaching building.
I have heard elsewhere that the new teacher accom is some way away, but the distance quoted above is extreme. Hell is it even on campus?
FTs for navigation school (seafarer) students is a new one, as in my time these guys didn't rate an actual foreigner. That said during the Education Ministry inspection week the FTs were expected to sit in with the navigation school classes and explain that this was a normal schedule.
None of the 17 FTs had an inspector visit their class during that week.
The lack of printing is new as I had a booklet of printing chits issued each semester and the on campus print shop would do most stuff inside 24 hours. The free stuff covered maybe 2/3 of my semester copying.
As a combo of city and uni DMU is a good bet, plus they seem to have no intention of moving out to Lushun which several other unis have done i.e medical and foreign languages. |
