Trapezius:

" how do you go about mocking beards here?"

Gee, I guess just the way I did.

There's no risk as long as the mocking beard don't sing. Wink

Seems to me that the answer would be... without thinking. Actually rather easy to do when working/living in a culture that is so different from our own.

Way back when I was teaching foundations for future English teachers in Oman, we were doing vocabulary on describing people. It had the term "salt and pepper" for hair. I used the example "like Sultan Qaboos's beard" and there was some quick intakes of breath. I was never sure if it was the beard reference or the Sultan. Oops, I thought, and quickly added that probably also the hair of their grandmother. (couldn't use their mother since most of them had mothers that were barely 30 years of age) Luckily none of them ran off to admin. Cool

AND for asking impertinent questions on an internet forum and thereby insulting the Faith !

What is rude about asking this question? where is the insult ? just by asking simple question about the country which I am going to spend a percentage of my life time in?
Questions will be asked, mate as long as Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Agnostic teachers fly to KSA to educate and help in the development of that part of the world.

I would like to thank everyone who post a reply to my answer and my apology for not being able to comment as I was unwell for the past few days.

First off, Scot47's posts are often more than a bit tongue in cheek, and I don't think he was referring to your original question. But discussions of this type often skate on the edge of what can/will be interpreted as insulting the faith. (even when no such insult is intended) It is why few of us on this section on the board use our real names. Jobs have been lost because the employers have read the posts here. And yes, many, if not most, monitor this board.

What VS says is true. You can insult the faith, the kingdom and the king all at once without knowing it, all of which may, to stick with the OP, get you lashed.

Remember, this is a land where instead of "a percentage of their lifetime" spent here, quite a few unintentionally spend the balance of it.
