Regards,

I know it's a lost cause, but I cringe whenever I hear nouns used as verbs.

Gift: "He gifted me the car."

Dear MuscatGary,

"revert when it's used instead of reply."

Good heavens - who speaks/writes that way? I've never come across THAT one. Very Happy

Regards,
John

It's VERY common in Indian English as in 'please revert to this email' but unfortunately is creeping into ME English due to the high number of Indian English teachers here.

Ouch. I sincerely hope this one doesn't make it into whatever 'standard' English is these days!

"You don't get to (insert verb here) blah blah blah!"

Said in righteous indignation when trying to reassert power in a relationship, where that power has been lost, or was never real to begin with.

Extremely annoying.

"It's not always about YOU . . . " (when the speaker is annoyed at not getting his/her way)

And here are some "translations" of what people really mean - as opposed to what they say:

2. Researchers: http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyfbuh86Tv1qbh26io1_400.jpg

3. Women speaking to men: http://www.chicksloveme.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/whatwomenmeantosay.png

4. 'Mercans: http://www.bbcamerica.com/mind-the-gap/2012/08/09/10-things-americans-say-and-what-they-really-mean/

5. Men speaking to women: http://www.csr.utexas.edu/personal/amy/joke1.html
