Wow, Tara! You make me want to live in the UK, too! So many of the things that you listed as being wrong with America will likely never change, particularly national public transportation. Just too darned spread out.

Some Japanese or J-published books (e.g. on more specialized aspects of language, or definitive works on karate kata for a specific style and by a specific master) will be hard to get or likely cost a good double or more back home. Check beforehand on Amazon whenever in doubt! And if you have a favourite ELT-type dictionary, it might be an idea to get one of the dinky slipcased top-quality flexibound and possibly bilingualized editions that the Japanese publish, as they're nicer than the standard western editions.
