| Wuhan's a weird city. It effectively has three centres (Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang). High property prices don't seem to be concentrated in any single 'downtown' area and bargains can be found almost anywhere. You can get decent riverside apartments relatively inexpensively, although you might not be very close to a subway station. That's my experience anyway. |

The 3000 all-up place my former student moved into already had a couple in residence.
A landlord would maintain the rent for a longterm good tenant, whereas they may up it if it went on the market again. |

| I think Weihai in Shandong would be the best place to work in China just for the laughs you would get from your stoner friends. |

Some points I'd make:
Beijing and Shanghai do have pollution issues but no worse than any other large Chinese city (and in fact probably less bad than some big cities eg Tianjin). They make the headlines because they're the most important mainland cities and the world media's foreign correspondents are based in these cities. |
Welcome Newbie
Beijing pollution problems are much worse than Shanghai's. The most polluted cities in China are in Hebei province which borders Beijing.
Those are probably the only ones worse than Beijing.
Look at the AQI history for Beijing versus other Chinese cities for PM 2.5
It becomes clear that Beijing is MUCH worse than any of other major Chinese city. |

I agree with you completely but there is one problem... Filthy Beijing has the most schools and thus the most job openings and that is why all the agents and recruiter flog the internet with "great jobs" in Beijing so THEY can make the most money. They will never tell you the truth about Beijing or Shanghai. So many teachers leave China because of the Beijing scams and pollution. If they got to teach in Hangzhou or another South China water-front city they might never leave.

Weihai is a great choice in the summer but you will freeze your ass off in the winter. I went their for a weekend wedding in January and it was -12 degrees F and they told me it was a "warm day for winter"!
Also to the guy who says Beijing and Shanghai is no worse than other cities for pollution... You obviously were not in Beijing during the winter months when they fire up the coal plants and every morning you see a layer of coal dust on all the cars, trees, sidewalks, etc. Here is a photo to remind you of the Beijing reality...

South China from Qingdao down is the the place to be and the water-front cities are by far the most fun. Also the girls get friendlier and the racism gets less the further South you go.
BTW... an NY Times article says that breathing Beijing air in the winter is worse than smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. Here is what the biggest newspaper in Hong Kong says about Beijing air pollution.

If you want to take 10 of 15 years off your life, be my guest and teach in Beijing or Shanghai which is only slightly better. |

Nope. I was deported about a month ago and was working in Beijing at the time. My exposure to China cities was limited to five but I happened to like Hangzhou the best for the reasons I explained - clean and economical without the smog and congestion of Beijing or Shanghai. Have you been there friend? If so what was your impression? |

Xiamen WAS a good city to live and teach in. Now it's got terrible traffic and way way too many annoying tourists.
Effectively ruined in the space of 10 years. Sad! |

Yes I have. Not quite the utopia you describe it as.
City centre - nice enough but not as attractive as Suzhou.
Tourist stuff - West Lake has beautiful scenery but too many people and as a result has litter problems. Not a lot else that I'd go out of my way to see. Six Harmonies Pagoda is nice enough.
Cuisine - again, good, but not as interesting as Huaiyang cuisine if we're talking about Shanghai area food.
People - reasonably nice, not particularly uncouth for a major Chinese city. |
