If they were really concerned about getting rid of germs in their mouths, they would floss their teeth once in awhile. Guess swishing around water does a better job of it though, right? Though maybe this is just a matter of perspective  |

This is a collision of cultural biases.
In the West, we are encouraged not to bug people over small things. In Japan, people are encouraged to avoid waste and to pay attention to detail. And by brushing off those concerns, you probably upset somebody a little.
You can dismiss it as being OTT, or anal retentiveness, or whatever, but I think you'll be a lot happier in Japan if you try to understand where people are coming from. |
