As an update, my colleague asked the UK visa office in Shanghai when he took his paperwork there, about transferring the RP to the new one when it arrives. Their advice was it is unnecessary, if travelling simply take the new and the cancelled passports with you.

It took the passport office two full months to process my new passport, moor than double the advertised length at the time. I ran out of pages so could not get an extension. As the passport was taking so long I ended up having to get an emergency passport which the Chinese government let me put my new visa in.

After getting my new passport I had the RP transferred. You are meant to get this done within 10 days of getting your new passport. In Beijing at least. If not, you are liable to pay a fine.

I sent a complaint off about all the problems with the new system for renewing a passport from overseas. They said they'd get back to be in two weeks. It's been closer to 4. No surprise there.

If you are British and need a new passport I would give yourself 3 months from first requesting your application interview to getting your new passport in your hand.
