30 teaching hours is on the high side I think. 8 classes per day is also a lot. I would check on those carefully. Teaching Chinese high school students econ could be a very frustrating experience sometimes I bet. I would want more time to recover. I would think there are jobs with similar compensation but 20 hours per week. Maybe 25. It would make a big difference for me. I suspect some classes you will want to pull your hair out and it would suck to have 4 or 5 more classes to teach when that happens.
As for the housing situation it varies depending on what part of the city you're in. You can rent rooms by the week where I'm at and the deposit for your own place is is usually around 3 months rent. Pretty much all apartments have 3 bedrooms where I am. Maybe 2500元 per month. But that means 10,000 for your first month. Renting a room maybe 500-800 per month depending on the quality. The quality of the rental properties can be very low sometimes...barely finished. |
Yeah, 8 classes per day I would have took a shot gun to the head . . . .
I got an update that my working hours are more in line with 17hrs/week with the most being 25/hrs. 45mins classes. So typical is just under 3 contact hours per day or 3.6 hrs max.
I am fine with Econ, a subject I have strong interest in, lots of related work experience and education congruous.
Probably in the Laoshan district, so you are renting a room on weekly basis how much was the deposit?
Any further advice you can give on your own experience looking at accommodations for a potential future QDer, appreciated. |

Judging from the experience of a Chinese friend who has just moved to another town, agents have 2br apartments that are already let to one person or a couple so the deposit issue might not be so onerous.
My friend only wants the place for 6m to complete a contract, so being tied down to a lengthy agreement wasn't an option.
QD has an active expat association (Google Qingdaoexpat). I'm sure your need isn't novel among the expat community. |

My girlfriend rented a room when I first met her. She had some problems with her room mates so I helped her look for a new place . I think she paid one week's rent deposit. It's almost always a sublet I think and usually informal. One tenant rents from the owner and sublets rooms. I have housing through my school. I think 58.com and anjuke are 2 of the more popular rental websites. Careful of your expectations though as some places that look good on the website can be really bad in person. One place just had unfinished concrete floors, doors held in place with wire, and a plywood "bed." Apartments here are usually furnished. I think Laoshan might be a little cheaper. Beds here are hard as rocks. Can't think of much else to say.
I think it would be more frustrating to teach a topic you have a lot of knowledge about and interest in. You will want to teach them a lot, but they might not understand much at all. You may have to dramatically dumb down your lessons and be disatisfied with that. Just something to think about. I am teaching public speaking and public relations at a Uni and teaching any sort of sophisticated topic is very frustrating. It's much more frustrating if it's something you're passionate about. You want so badly to teach them it and they just stare at you glassy-eyed and uncomprehending no matter how many ways you try to communicate it.
Edit:
Or you have them do what you think is a really cool exercise, they seem to be working hard at it, and it turns out they never unnderstood the question or exercise and are talking about something completely off-topic. I just did one where they were to pretend there was an earthquake in Harbin, and to think of ways their company can help out while also showing off something about the company. Showed them lots of examples. I think it's a fun exercise. I explain the exercise several times until they all say yes we understand. Result? A couple groups had great ideas. A couple had generic ideas. Some couldn't communicate more than a few words. Some were totally unprepared. One talked about opening a restaurant. One talked about all the snacks their company will make.
Oh and they copy homework from the internet or their friends like crazy.
I'm not sure I would want to teach a subject I was very passionate about here. Or maybe just one of those days. |

Thanks for the links regarding housing, one of the perks about Uni gigs is the free accommodations rather than the headaches searching for a place on your own, this I am not thrilled on particularly when you have all the duties of teaching a subject from the get go plus the upfront multiple months rental costs. Did your Uni provide a 1 BR apartment or was it a dorm setting?
Looks like studio or bachelor with kitchen are hard to find.
I hear what you are saying on subject teaching. |

I don't expect your typical weekly timetable will be in this contract but you should get an undertaking on maximum time pw in front of the class.
The 3000 pm is probably OK for accom provided you move into an established apartment and are effectively a sub tenant.
Really OP on your first job it's as much about minimising the downside as getting the perfect position.
Depending on your home country 10000 travel is OK.
City is good. District (Laoshan) ditto.
If you can get the contact hours sorted I'd go with it. |

Yes, I tried beforehand to get them to state MAXIMUM teaching hours worded into the contract, they have been elusive, but I haven't signed of course, stalling them on docs etc. Will endeavor to have his committed in firm numbers 24 teaching hours max per week.
Moreover, for subject teaching, I maybe responsible for 3 subjects, Econ, Business Studies and Accounting. What they say is true on the forums, most China school thinks a fellow that can teach 1 AP subject can and should teach related AP classes, I am asking for a raise to what I originally asked for 18-20K/mth separate from that crappy 3K housing allowance.
Just a note, these guys a willing to do an upfront flight over, ie buying the ticket and giving boarding # with rest of the allowance given in April. As far as China contracts I've researched this is the first time I observed this option, only Korean/Japan/Saudi contracts have upfront airfare? |

Up front is unusual for China.
You want typical contact hours or a maximum.
Hell they're working school Astro. They should be able to show you what other teachers have on their plates this semester! |

The teacher will therefore receive a total RMB 15,000 per month after tax.
老师因此将收到税后每月15,000人民币
Math error or oversight there I think. Shouldn't it be 17060?
Not just AP...if you have a doctorate degree they think you can teach any Uni subject. My uni wanted me to teach international economics...something I learned very little of studying English and law. |

^^^ That's the after tax amount, they combined the housing stipend with the base to get 15K, still not exactly sure how the tax structure works there but 15 is pretty lousy for 3 subjects. Will make sure the indicated hours are set in the contract or I will bail, can wait till next Feb for new semester. This job is full time hours plus 8to5 with not enough of full time pay. Will see . . .
Uni gigs pay crap but you got all those eyes to explore plus the less housing nonsense. |

Income tax is very low here. I think the top tax bracket is 10%. That amount for tax seems way too high and with the wording you should be getting 17k after tax I think. It might just be a mistake they made. Or they listed a high salary to get good candidates but can't actually afford that so they're wheedling you down. I pay 6yuan in taxes on 5k.
I got a small 2bdrm as an apt. Was talking with a teacher at another uni here and the teachers just got moved to the top floors of a brand new building with ocean voews which is sweet.
I use strongvpn which works but it's too slow to get streaming video. They had a special going on at the time. Will try a different one once my subscription is up.
I think the uni gigs are nice if you have something to occupy your spare time. I am looking to do high school next year because I just have too much time and nothing to do really. Could use the extra pay too. |

It is off topic, that is why there are threads about both in the off topic forum. Not trying to be rude, just saying. |
