http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/irish_citizenship/your_right_to_irish_citizenship.html

"Republic of Ireland" is the label for the real place. "Irish Republic" is that mystical entity for which the patriots died ! (ie the full shebang - all 32 counties !)

How about grandparents? The following suggests that you might be able to apply based on having at least one grandparent born there:

My understanding is that Ireland and Italy are the two easiest EU countries to qualify for citizenship on the basis of ancestry.

If you have a grandparent who was a citizen of either country at the time of your birth, then you would qualify for citizenship in that country.

My great grandfather immigrated from Ireland to the US. My grandfather who was born in the US would be regarded as an Irish citizen.

So does that qualify me to apply for Irish citizenship through descent?

Sounds complicated.

I have a friend who received her citizenship through an Irish grandmother, she now lives legally in Berlin.

I got my UK citizenship with my deceased English mother's birth certificate thanks to a lot of help from an immigration lawyer. The process is long and complicated if you do it on your own, and you may get turned down for any number of errors on your application.

The lawyer cost me approximately 1000 pounds and I needed to meet with officials in both London and San Francisco. The whole process took about 9 months from my first meeting with the lawyer, to swearing my allegiance to the Queen, and applying and waiting for a passport to be couriered from England.

It is definitely doable if you have a clean record, money in the bank (as in, not bankrupt), references, no major health issues, and paperwork, but it is not a quick and easy process.
