Dear VietCanada,

I appreciate your assistance in trying to educate me, but since I actually teach Academic English, it's my opinion that I don't need to dumb down my posts for the readers of these threads.

Of course, there could be exceptions. Very Happy

Let me also answer your edited post. Is the implication that one can/should post only articles that one agrees with?

Regards,
John

Dear Sasha,

I don't think he likes me - I'm crushed. Very Happy

Ah, well - the old Arab proverb about dogs barking but caravans moving on comes to mind. Very Happy

John

Dear Johnslat

"May he be close to the heart of Allah, but far from me", is one of my favourite ones. In a strictly Marxist interest in oppressed nationalities kind of way, of course.

The implication is that without context a poster might assume that you do. Why would you post an article that you don't agree with? Anyone could spam the boards with those.

Why post an article you disagree with? It was rather easily dismissed by the first poster who responded.

"First, know that a dog in Persia is not an animal held in high esteem.

It means that the lowly may criticize and complain, but that doesn't stop the flow of events as determined by those of worth."

Just another boring ad hominen attack from the trolls.

Why post the article if you disagree with it?

Dear VietCanada,

"Why post the article if you disagree with it?"

Do you seriously think that people should post ONLY articles that they agree with? Why?
Moreover, there could be cases when are parts of the article an OP agrees with and parts the OP disagrees with.

By the way, I like dogs (two share our house) and I'm not a caravan. Very Happy

Regards,
John

I'm still waiting for an explanation as to why you'd post an article when you disagree with it.

Dear VietCanada,

Are you assuming that I disagree (or agree) with it?

There are a number of possibilities, one mentioned in my last post.

1." Moreover, there could be cases when are parts of the article an OP agrees with and parts the OP disagrees with."

2. Even if a poster disagrees with most or even all of an article, it might get posted because the poster feels that there are some/many who might agree with it and finding out their reasons for doing so could be interesting.

3. If a poster disagrees with most/all of an article, the poster might want to see how many fellow posters agree/disagree with that estimate - and their reasons for and against.

Articles are usually posted to invite discussion (hence my question, "Comments?") by those that agree with, disagree with, or partially agree with the article's arguments/points.

These all seem fairly obvious to me - but clearly that's not the case for everyone.

Regards,
John
