By back to back you mean 2x40 mins with the same students?

Yeah, you nailed it. Back-to-Back 40 minute classes with the same students. Sometimes the "class" will change (i.e. TOEFL Writing versus TOEFL Speaking), but I've got a pretty great schedule this semester and am basically teaching the same 8 students in a "Seminar" setting.

We're studying SAT / IELTS and TOEFL together, as all of the students will be taking one (or more) of those tests in the next 3 to 4 months. I'm only responsible for teaching the Writing and Speaking components, however, so it works out pretty well. One of our other teachers is focusing on Listening and Reading.

Cheers!

Interesting.
I've had 45 and 50 min hours, but your situation (40 min) is the first time I've encountered this.
Still as long as it counts as an hour I suppose Very Happy

I prefer when they treat a single class as a 'teaching hour', regardless of the length. This is because the 5-,10-, or even 15-minute breaks between classes are essentially working hours too. There's not much you can do with them. If I have to be at school for say three hours, I really don't much care if it is for 3 55-minute lessons with 5-minute breaks, or 3 40-minute lessons with 20-minute breaks. I'm there. And teaching is often more fun than not--just give me a chance to pee and I'm good.

I feel the same way as Voyeur ... as long as the schedule is pretty "tight" and I'm not sitting around for hours waiting for my next class, then it's all good. So far, I've been quite lucky in that regard.

I do have to add, however, that I teach at a training center, a university and an I.S., and it's only at the I.S. that I have 40 minute "hours."

At the training center it's 50 minute hours, and the same goes for the university. I'm pretty lucky though, as I only teach at the t.c. and the university for 4 hours a week (each).

The only "bad thing" is having to go back and forth to each job, but I've become accustomed to it, and I have the electric scooter to get me to work and back home, so it's a pretty good gig.

My apartment is centrally located, so it takes me 15 minutes or less to get to each school. I have no complaints. The job's not too difficult. I meet nice people daily, work with some great colleagues and have some pretty terrific students.

Cheers!

Yeah. One job I looked at was advertising hours in the low 20's and it turned out to be thirty 40-minute classes. That is a real crap schedule for the middling pay they were offering. Make sure you know they're talking about teaching hours. It can make a big difference at some schools.
