I had all my documents prepared for the application for the Temporary Leave to Remain in Russia, which cost quite a lot of money only to find out that they stopped applications on December 26th and the rules will be different from January 12th.
As you are all aware you will have to pass a language and history test, since it will all be in Russian it is safe to assume that your Russian will need to be virtually fluent.
Bad news guys and there are no exceptions, even for a work visa you still have to sit the test.
Plus the fingerprint machine.. |

Having asked around, it seems that we may be fine. Teaching Visas being different to standard work visas. We'll find out for sure in due time. |
Same test for ALL visas. No exceptions. |

Wow, according RIA News, everyone who plans on living in Russia (including those with residency) will be required to pass exams on their knowledge of Russian language, history, politics, legislation, in order to get a work permit. If you've received some form of higher education in Russia you don't need to take the test. There are other exceptions as well, but not for "specialist," but "highly-qualified specialists," which is a special category of residents who earn $60k + a year, among other things. NOT teachers, in other words. Accredited journalist are also excluded from the new rule. Your visa guy is right. That's a killer. How many English teachers do you know who speak solid Russian? Granted, I doubt the state test are very difficult...

I imagine you would have to be fluent as the history etc questions will also be in Russian... |

It is for anyone wanting a work visa or a TRP. Here is a link to the testing site, elementary level would be so so but with the added general knowledge test it will bump it up to the fluent level.
Here is the link that everyone should see, bear in mind the examples are from 2000.

Yea, I looked at a few of the language tests. Most of the stuff is very basic that anybody who's studied Russian for a year or so should be able to pass without problem. Plus, it looks like you can take a course aimed at passing the test at a Russian uni, which I'm sure invariably results in getting one of those certificates. This might be a legal means for those who don't know the language very well at all. I also looked at the history test that one of the posters linked. Again, pretty basic stuff, though I wasn't sure about the question about when schools were separated from the church (most likely under Lenin), Day of Unity (December, right?) and the Battle of Kulikovo (1380?), but on the actual test you can use a historical dictionary and the Q&As are given in advance, so that makes things much easier. Anyway, good luck! |

You can't really 'renew' a visa, do you mean a work visa or business visa, you don't need the test for a business visa. Good luck. FMS is shut unitl Jan 12th. |

Possibly 'extending' a visa was meant. |

Yeah, good luck. Things are bad enough as they are with the decline of the rouble, I wouldn't fancy being a teacher in a mac school now, the pay was low enough to start with plus all the dodgy procedures which are well documented. Although I doubt any TEFL teacher is in it to make any profit.
Changing the subject entirely, I heard yesterday that if you live in the UK you can't leave the country if you have any outstanding bills, such as council tax or tv licence, warrants etc (and I thought the new Russian laws were daft! ) |

As far as I know that is the same as in Russia - hence the long queues at passport control, even for Russians leaving, and the police scanning all passports.
But as for the UK, is that really true? There is no passport control check point, no police scanning your travel documents etc. There is talk of re-introducing it in the near future, but at present you just check in with the airline, go through the metal detector checks and then straight to the gates. |
