Read the article nomad soul provided. It actually gives some hard data. It is not like everyone in China has cancer. It's just a touch higher than other countries. The bigger problem is lack of screening, lack of well-trained doctors, and the extremely high cost of treatment, which leads to a high rate of cancer-related deaths.

Women are living long enough to get breast cancer...that's not entirely a bad thing.

Westerner's make way too big of a deal about the pollution here. Yeah it's bad, but the chances of it killing you are pretty damn low, especially since we didn't grow up here and most of us only spend about 8 months per year here, living in modern cities and drinking bottled water.

When an Israeli friend in Thailand first told me about the 'tainted' beef in China I was also incredulous, but what he had to say along with my own independent research finally convinced me. Also, consider that most Chinese really have no traditional, religious or moral qualms against it..."anything with legs that's not a table"...

It's a well established fact that the internet and media censors in China most definitely attempt to block the most negative information relating to the very adverse health consequences of the degraded environment there. Try informing your students that China is the most polluted country on earth, that 16 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are Chinese, or that China has the world's highest cancer and birth defect rates--they will adamantly resist you.

BTW, I'm not a China hater or basher, I actually love the place and even feel that perhaps their one party political arrangement is in several important respects better than the increasingly artificial, corporate controlled democracies of the West. However, as regards the matter of pollution and public health; their system is a total fail. Even the ingratiating China bull and legendary investor Jim Rogers has said he wouldn't risk living there.

Now I feel better--I can smoke 5 packs of cigarettes per day for 8 months a year with no worries. Cancer statistics issued by the Chinese government are pure fiction, everyone knows that, the rate is actually several times higher. Second, 'modern cities' is a euphemism for what...death zones? Then, are you sure the water in that bottle has been properly purified? Are you sure? What is it that the Chinese do not fake, copy, counterfeit or misrepresent for quick profits...pet food?...baby milk?...prescription drugs?...anything? And you're also sure they're using purified water in restaurants, tea shops, etc?

I taught English in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen. In each city I had the frequent experience of not being able to see the building next to mine through the toxic soup, my shower water at times smelled of something suspiciously akin to turpentine, and sickening wafts of chemical stench would force me to close all windows in my apartment. Once, a co-worker bought a sealed pack of raisins at the supermarket that utterly stank of something like ammonia mixed with bleach when opened--"passed by the SFDA", the writing said. (The head of this agency was executed in 2007 for corruption and it has since been renamed 'CFDA'. Nevertheless, from that time it has been continually wracked by scandals)
