we still retell the tale of the teacher who headbutted a particularly obnoxious student and got away with no more than a warning. Ahhh... bliss... |

A student threatened to shoot me because I asked him what he was doing (he was sitting there with a phone at his desk.).
Talking to any Saudi student in that manner can get you fired quickly. As annoying as they are with their cheating, if you cause them to lose face they can go to the upper administration bypassing the teaching supervisors and have you gotten rid off. I think if other students witness it, the weak ones will feel almost obligated to join in with the student who doesn't like you and join in with the complaining. That is one of the main problems with the system here.
Do you find this happened more than any other place in the world? I only ask because that seems to be a dynamic across cultures: a student with a stronger personality causing a mutany, dragging the weaker ones behind. But, is this something more prone to happen because of the culture in the KSA? |

Oh please tell that story. That's a good one to hear for no other reason than IT WAS A HEADBUTT. |

What about your own situation in wherever it is that you teach? These incidents are not unique to the culture of KSA. You could pose this question on the other country forums and get similar responses about bad student behavior. Besides, I'm sure you're aware of the day-to-day bullying and violence in schools in the West. |

A headbutt! LOL
I once told a student I'd meet him in Bahrain, break his legs then chuck him in the sea.
The wildest students I ever saw were Italian kids on summer school. |
