Always hard to tell. With contacts on the ground, one can get lucky. But very often even the crappiest flats a minibus from an end-of-the-line metro cost about 30k. Or about 1000 usd. At least, it did. Not sure how market is changing to be honest. But I'd expect a return to dollar-linked prices, with artifically inflated rates in the landlords' favour...

I'll second most of it from my own experience, although it was in 2005/6.
But without wishing to sound over-pessimistic,I really would wait for a while and see how things go in Russia before deciding to go there as the economy could get much worse, along with other things?
Concerning accomodation it seems that you feel the way I did and don't want to share a flat. This can cost you a lot of hassle and cash, even more so if you don't have a Russian person to help you find somewhere. It will inevitably burn a considerable portion of your income and paying more doesn't always guarantee better quality over there.I would really investigate this before you go and if possible have somewhere affordable ready for you on arrival.I have posted several times on this site on this topic over the years but do feel welcome top.m. if you want to.

Well that's what I assumed. But it seems that due to most Russians being unable to afford dollar set rents, I know of a few people who's landlords renegotiated and changed to ruble rents out of fear of losing their tenant.

I've been told (but I have no way of verifying it) that landlords are struggling a bit right now because people are less likely to move in the current economic situation, so prices are frozen rather than rising.

Lets face it, you can be as greedy as you like, but with Russians losing their jobs in droves, you simply cannot demand higher rent and expect to actually get it from people who have no money.

Whose!!! Grrr!

True. I have heard of that from some contacts too. But I fear the reverse may be a trend as well. Some landlords truly don't know where their self-interests lie...

Jebus! I am ashamed! A momentary lapse in mental competence.

You have my word; I wont never make another grammatical errors again.

There's a wall in the Lubyanka against which offenders can be lined up. Doesn't take long to ensure that such errors are truly never repeated...

Cigarette? A few last words?

WHAT?!!! NOT being sarcastic???!!! How could you do that to us?! And, how, pray tell, do you expect to survive the Motherland without a keenly-developed sense of sarkiness? Dear, oh dear, brother.

Come on. We'll help you out there : )
