Dear Bindair Dundat,
| Quote: |
| In lesser (or less focused) emergencies, I would probably stay put until the initial crisis had passed, and then make my way to the U.S. mission. When at all possible, I routinely maintain contact with U.S. officials, regardless of which country I am in. Just gave them a call this morning, in fact. I let them know who I am, where I am, who I'm with, and what I'm doing. |
I wouldn't count too heavily on those "US officials" were I you. Back in 1978, on my first jaunt abroad, I registered with the American Consulate in Shiraz. When things started "heating up" all of us there were in contact with the people at the consul and we were assured that:
1. all was well
2. we would be notified and told what to do if any emergency happened
Well, when the situation REALLY heated up, we tried calling, got no answer, went down there and found the place locked and boarded up, all personnel gone, not even a note on the door. Found out later they'd decamped to Tehran without notifying MOST of those who'd registered with them (only very close friends were informed).
Needless to say, I have had little respect for and confidence in our "representatives" overseas since then.
Regards,
John |

Dear Aramas,
You're a few years out. Gold peaked in 1980. The average price was $615 an ounce, though I think there was one month when it reached $800. $615 in 2002 money is $1,463. So $1 you invested in 1980 would be worth 26 cents now. |

I stand corrected. Gold still seems to be an excellent devestment though |

Yeah, better access to airplanes, and we all know how safe airplanes are. But your point is taken. It just worries me that the US embassy is in the middle of moscow and the airport on the outskirts, while monasteries in the middle of nowhere seem like less likely targets. It also depends on where the center of the trouble is. Getting to the embassy and getting to the airport might not be much fun.
I've never been much of a buyer of gold. But I thought the idea of gold was not the percentage rate investment numbers stuff, but the fact that it is (potentially) untraceable, more or less universally valuable, and not dependent on a particular government? Oh, and it (potentially) makes very nice fishing weights.
If I'm growing potatoes in the wilds of Siberia maybe I can find some time to pan a little gold.
Though I think the stuff probably attracts more trouble than it's worth. Potatoes are a much better commodity that way.
John, thanks for the story about non-support from the embassy. I kind of think that if the US govt was all that interested in American abroad it would quit doing things that anger the people around us. The government is your friend, it cares about every single American, the entire US military is ready to go in in defense of a single endangered American. All hogwash. Propoganda. Can you say expendable? Good, I knew you could.
In contrast, has anybody else noticed a recent improvement in efficiency and friendliness at your friendly neighborhood US mission? Our's has been great lately. Professional, friendly, efficient, well-organized, human, and capable of a little humor. Maybe because communist smurf is working there? |
