Sending money from an ATM or convenience store is pretty easy, but what could be easier than doing it online? A few clicks and it's done.

ssjup81, I also sent money to a credit union account. If you use Go Remit, it doesn't matter what bank account you have in Japan. You just transfer the money to your Go Remit account and it automatically sends it to your US account. Costs 2000 yen per transfer.

I use GoRemit for larger amounts. The fee is 2000 yen plus whatever fee the intermediary bank charges (Chase charged either $15 or $20 before).

If I need to send home smaller amounts, I simply made an account with Rakuten Bank and got a Visa debit card. I sent the Visa debit card back home, and whenever I want to send money home I simply send money to the Rakuten Bank account and tell my dad to take money out. Rakuten Bank only charges a 3.024% charge on the exchange rate (for the US, this compares to GoRemit's 4000 yen plus the exchange rate).
