Dear Johnslat,
To answer your question, I believe news mentioned that the U.S. is the worst offender of this type of "sports activity" compared to other nations (well, I can think of a few comparable ones that remain covert or swept under the Persian rug), so to single out the poor DDS would, as I deduced from the ensuing comments, be unfair and discriminatory, i.e., why make this guy the scapegoat simply because of all the media hype? Expect a lot of waffling. So what else is new!

Dear peripatetic_soul,
Ah, the old "But so many people do it" fallacy as a explanation/justification for doing something illegal, unethical or immoral.
Well, I hope you're wrong. Too bad the IRS isn't involved. That "But so many people do it - why single out me" argument doesn't work too well with them.
Regards,
John |

Dear esl_prof,
Any particular reason for thinking a weaseling-out will take place?

Dear John,
Let me answer your question with a question. Can you name one U.S.-born citizen (not naturalized) who has ever been extradited by the U.S. government to a third-world country?

Dear esl_prof,
Darn, I lost that list of all the US citizens extradited to 3rd world countries.
Well, from memory I know that US citizens HAVE been extradited to Mexico (but I wouldn't want to classify that as a third-world country).
Incidentally, isn't it about time that term (third-world) got a well-deserved retirement?
Regards,
John |

Dear buravirgil.
I suspect the most "PC" terms are "developing" and "developed" nations - although the unwarranted implication there is that the "development" has been completed in the latter.

Can we retire the term "PC"?
Did you not have the time to click and scan the links provided in my post before responding with your own? |

Dear buravirgil,
I looked at them - but saw nothing there to prevent my offering my own opinion.

Why the Reuter's article about Bob Zoellick? That the Economist link didn't cover?
Developed/developing is the most widely used/accepted distinction, PC or not. I merely noted competing examples/trends. What prompted my reply to your post to esl_prof was an admonition without alternative. |

Dear buravirgil,
Just what "admonition" are you referring to? I'm aware that there are alternative terms.

Dear buravirgil,
An odd word choice to my mind since to admonish usually has a negative, scolding sort of meaning.
Also, I was unaware that "admonitions" had to be accompanied by "alternatives." Consequences, perhaps (Don't do that again or I'll kill you).
Regards,
John |
