Dear sickleyman,
A reference that, I'd say, displays a considerable knowledge of the Bible. Did you, I wonder, ever think yourself destined for the ministry? (Full disclosure: I was in the seminary myself (Maryknoll) for three years).
17 Naaman said, "If not, please let your servant at least be given two mules' load of earth; for your servant will no longer offer burnt offering nor will he sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD. 18"In this matter may the LORD pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon your servant in this matter." 19He said to him, "Go in peace." So he departed from him some distance.
Regards,
John |

Every person I knew in Saudi was there for the money.
I stopped asking because ppl thought the answer was obvious.
I knew two types - they were there for the M or money or 3M which was Mecca, Medina and Money.
I thought if anyone could do well it would be the Jordanians but they all had a rough go.
Heres the odd part - I make more in China than I did in Saudi but I work much more. |

That someone would think life long enough to spend years of their career in both Saudi and China |

YOUR POLL SEEMS TO SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT......
The majority of folks that contribute to this forum (currently 57%) chose DA MONEY as the reason that they came to KSA.
Come for the money....stay for the rich cultural experience.... |

The poll simply indicates that money isn't the only motivator for working in KSA.
Except for folks in dire financial circumstances or with major ongoing financial obligations, not everyone's a slave to money. In fact, some of us (myself included) have worked in high-paying occupations prior to teaching and found the experience unrewarding/uninteresting; the salary and bonuses alone weren't cutting it. Additionally, job seekers with solid TEFL-related credentials (e.g., an MA in TESOL, DELTA, etc.) and experience are confident their qualifications will net top pay anyway (regardless of where they teach), which allows them to focus on personal interests and other non-work related factors. |

NO, NO
If I am there only for the money that must mean that EVERYONE else is, too.
That's only LOGICAL!!!!

57 percent for the money
15 for other.....we don't know what that is.
10 for religious
Your poll indicates that, by far, money is the number one reason to go to KSA......Some folks go for religious reasons (understandable). We don't know what the other category stands for.....could it be for the corniche?
Ignore the rest...money is the reason.
Sure there are other reasons to come to KSA....but money is the number one reason. So enjoy...other category....while you rake in the dough.
When forum posters state that "Money is the only reason" the numbers in your poll support this. Technically, there are a few that have other reasons...but who cares.
Newsflash....it is OK to generalize some times....especially when the numbers show a clear majority.
Now take out your red pen....and start correcting. |

Not to mention (as has been mentioned before) that's it's a flawed poll in that people can come for more than one reason, but the poll doesn't permit multiple answers,
Maybe a better way to do it would be not with a poll (since it won't allow multiple answers) but with a new thread., asking why did you do and why have you stayed.

This thread still invites others to explain/elaborate on their reasons and add to the discussion, which some have done.
I created a poll because 1) it provides a visual representation of the responses versus a typical discussion in which comments can easily get lost (or go off topic) as the thread gets longer; and 2) it allows for "safe" participation from those who wouldn't likely post their responses for fear of being ridiculed or whatever reason.
Again, the poll's purpose is only to show that there isn't just one reason (i.e., money) why job seekers head to KSA. |

Our compound had a set of saunas and a nice pool that was around 17c in winter. For half the year, it was a Scandinavian-style spa a hundred paces from my villa door. I knew I'd never have its equal again. Korean Jjimjilbangs have been the only similar experience.
It's not aerobic, but the circulation induced by those extremes is amazing and great for blood pressure. |

erm... they usually have a door to allow you to exit and roll in the snow while thrashing yourself with birch leaves. Guess no leaves were provided in Saudi |
