Yep, a job unrelated to TEFL.
Apologies, my mistake for not checking what I'd written.
That should have read,"an unrelated degree and a CELTA."
For the case in point the guy had about five years experience of teaching EFL, his degree was music related, and the job was with a well known military contractor from the UK. |

25k USD is a joke salary, especially for living in the KSA.
Most of you need to start raising your games and your expectations. 25k USD is well below the average pay back home, and 'back home' is much more pleasant than Saudi Arabia.
I'd want 80k USD to work in KSA.
As someone else pointed out, the salary mentioned was in Riyals per month, which funnily enough works out to about 80,000$ a year, plus a car, free housing and no bills. |
There are not many teaching English in KSA and earning SR25,000 a month.
but they can be found with a little bit of luck and perseverance.
One thing that I have noticed, is that out of all the people I know who have got higher paying EFL jobs in Saudi, all had spent time in Saudi before getting that job, so it wasn't their first teaching job in KSA.
Don't know if there's anything in that, whether it's difficult to land those jobs straight away.
Anyone else got any thoughts on that? |

Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog
Other than that? Maybe specific/special purposes curriculum creation (technical and proprietary) and its delivery/implementation. Never seen documentation myself. Related to me by professors a long time ago. |

"25k USD is a joke salary, especially for living in the KSA." That would be $300.000 a year, if my math is right.
25K in riyals per month equals $6,666 (rather appropriate number, eh?) in the USA
Of course, in the USA, you'd have taxes, health insurance, and SS taken out. Plus, not many US employers provide housing.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Salary (United States)
The average salary for an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher is $39,914 per year. Most people with this job move on to other positions after 20 years in this field. A skill in Japanese Language is associated with high pay for this job.

bigdurian... since you seem to prefer to use quotes, you need to go and correct your profile choices so that they show up properly - as corrected above.
Go down and choose "yes" at "Always Allow BBC Code"
Your messages are very hard to decipher when this is not 'allowed'

Oh, but that can't be true! After all, it's next to impossible to get another job in Saudi once you have already worked there, let alone in any other of the Gulf States. The resident expert has said so herself. |

It's always possible to come back to the region and back to the same country at a different job, even in Saudi. It all depends on the terms on which you left each country. However, the competition is getting much tougher, so one must add that to the balance. |

No one has ever made any such claim... neither a he nor a she. But many people here have reading comprehension issues.

How serious is grading or do you simply have to pass everybody? |
Usually there is lots of talk about how their school or university is strict, however they will kick out the 1 or 2 people to make examples, after that the F's and D's have to be made C's. The learning is rote by the way.

| Do students participate in classes or do you only teach to "the few" |
How many students are actually interested in being taught depends on the class. However activities consist of mostly writing sentences and question answering and speaking with partners. As far as getting them to move into groups and other types of activities, I wouldn't recommend it. These are things that you will immediately see when you arrive.

It's a good idea to know the material, also lesson planning is a good idea even if you won't use it.

Are there any companies or schools to avoid and any that you would choose as a preference
Cheers |
A company to avoid at all costs is AEL (Accredited English Language Center). Another company to stay away from is Learn4Life. Send me a message and I'll tell you why to avoid AEL. |
