I can't be bothered looking for sources right now, but everything I've read talks about less foreigners working in China every year. |

Yes. My preamble set the scene for public sector jobs only.
You will get 12 month jobs in the training centres but accom may or may not be provided ditto airfares.
I'll PM you a list of current jobs in Liaoning - Dalian (cold) and Shenyang (perishing).
Because it is just one province and one advertiser you get the various types of jobs and their conditions set out in one page.
I walked into a nightmare my first year (2004) and from that point I've been super cautious for myself and others I post to. |

| Given that OP expressed interest in paying off his debts, I think it's safe to assume that he is willing to live life on the frugal side. |

I'm wondering if 20k and up teaching jobs will even exist 2 years from now.
Chinese are getting cocky and arrogant, and are lowering the salaries. They know they can dick around desperate foreigners with useless degrees coming en masse to China for work. |
This drum has been banged for years, I have yet to see any evidence for it. Anecdotal is all i have but the average salaries being offered on the websites i monitor have been rocketing upward in recent years. |

The university in Dalian that I taught at in 2004 has increased its FT '20 hours or less' contract.
In 2004 I received 5000pm and the same job is currently being advertised at 6500pm.
The other conditions seem the same but the travel allowance has reduced to 8000 from 10000 on completion.
There is a hidden increase in that the RMB has strengthened in value over time, but the again living cost in Dalian have increased also. |

If you are prepared to teach kindergarten for 25 hours + a week in Shanghai or another high paying city, then you could probably get 15 or 20K per month, with or without free accommodation, even in your first year of teaching. Depends on your personality and skills, and how hard-working you are.
But I guess most FTs in China earn less than 10K per month. A free room makes a big difference, and things like internet and utilities are not expensive, so sending home 2500 RMB per month is easily doable on 8-10K monthly salary. But starting salaries are often nearer 6K.
You need some fallback cash if things go wrong. Living month to month with nothing at the end of the month in the bank means you have no escape route. In China things can change suddenly and you might have to move, or leave. |

Just keep in mind that in public school jobs you are only paid for 10 months.
Accordingly your 12xmonthly US repayments must be met from 10xmonths of income.
If your eventual plan provides for a basic uni job for about 6500 but which gives you accommodation and airfare as well, you could top up your income with privates.
That said it will take you 3 months to get your head around this place and the teaching job you are employed to do.
Income from privates is immensely variable and really depends on how hard you work. So don't factor in privates until month 4.
Can you get a repayment 'holiday' for 3 months to enable you to transition?

Yes, I think this will be important to remember. No, I do not think I'll be able to get a repayment holiday unfortunately. But, some of the jobs I've seen say that these holidays are paid? Am I misunderstanding? Also, I don't know if I'd want to start with 6500, I think the lowest I'd feel comfortable making would be 10000 as some other posters have mentioned. I am wondering if spending 3000 per month will be enough, as I will likely be paying for phone, internet, and utilities, as well as food. I think I could live frugally, so I am hoping this information is correct. I'm thinking I should split the difference between what I originally thought, 20k, and what has been suggested, 10k, and maybe search for a job paying 14-15k with accommodation paid. Is this reasonable for a first time teacher in China? I have a BA in English and some experience (1 yr) tutoring English composition for ESL students in the states. That was about 7 years ago though. |
Local phone plan: ~$6/month with 100 minutes, 1gb data, 100 texts (everyone uses wechat where I live so only data really matters and wifi is plentiful).
Utilities in winter: ~$10-15 per month (heating is normally paid by the school)
Utilities in summer: ~$20-30/month
Water is usually paid for but tends to run about $10 per month for my girlfriend and I.
Internet you have to pay a year at a time. ~$190 for a year of 20mbit downstream. |

He might be able to land a job for around 15k. 17k is stretching it. No kindergarten or center is going to pay 20k for a new teacher, even an experienced teacher getting that much is rare in those types of jobs.
Also, they will expect him to work his ass off and pretty much be a dancing foreign monkey on crack the second he comes into the school up until the second he leaves. Or, they will immediately fire his ass. |

I would have to respond with a resounding .. oh, never-mind.... O.K. .... if you believe this ..someone dropped you on your head when you were a youngin... |
I have a young daughter and a wife that's a stay at home mom for now, we spend less than 5,000RMB a month as a family and we live an extremely comfortable life.
It's more than doable, I would struggle trying to spend more than 3,000 RMB a month by myself. |
