This is a common misconception based on the fact that there are a lot of Spanish loaner words in Tagalog. Tagalog is an Austronesian language, related to Malay languages, of course other Philippine languages and even Polynesian languages. My deceased father-in-law whose L1 was Hawaiian and L2 was Hawaiian Creole spoke Tagalog (L3) with what I was told by several Filipinos was incredible fluency despite having never having been to the Philippines. He told me that the grammar was the same and he just had to learn the words.
