I expected some asinine questions given what gets posted within these forums. No surprise there -- it's the norm.

Leaving aside the question of whether or not your questions should be asked at interview, do you not think it a little presumptuous of you tell us what we SHOULD or SHOULDN¨T be saying in an interview situation. Lots of the readers have a wealth of experience in the Gulf and will ask for advice when they want it.

No one's telling anyone they have to ask these questions. The intent of this thread is so that those new to KSA don't get screwed or leave an interview feeling uninformed because they didn't get enough info about the position, visa type, bringing dependents, etc. This is a common theme in some of the PMs I receive (yes, I get pm'd for advice) and in some of the discussions within this forum, which is why I started the thread. Anyway, teachers with Gulf experience can overlook the discussion or contribute if they like.

Some of the "old-timers" seem to forget what they didn't know when they went for their first job interview in the Gulf.

And interview questions are repeatedly asked both on the board and on PMs that many of us receive regularly. People usually worry too much about questions they may be asked and forget that there are questions they may need answered too.

Sooo... *bump* you too Izmi... LOL

VS

(PS... one thing I found odd was the repeated mention of more than one interview. I never had more than one... was hired at the first. But I was always direct hire... no recruiters. That may be the difference.)

Maybe so but wouldn´t you say that it is discourteous to use the word ¨asinine¨ when referring to comments made by posters who have afforded the OP the courtesy of reading her (?) post and then taken the trouble to reply to it?

Dear sheikh,

I take it you subscribe to the oft-expressed teaching dictum: There's no such thing as an asinine question.

Well, call me a heretic, but over the span of 37 years ('78 - now), I must confess that I've heard and seen a few.

And then, there's this: "Whoever Said There’s No Such Thing as a Stupid Question Never Looked Carefully at a Standardized Test." Very Happy

Regards,
John

For clarification, the silly (interview) questions I was referring to include:
"Why am I applying for a job in Saudi?"
"Am I sane?" (Which you found funny.)
"Are you going to answer truthfully?"
Hey, if you feel they're valid to ask during an interview, then go for it. Frankly, I consider it guys being funny. It's the norm. No harm done.

I guess you are speaking from your own experience.

Mr. S. I know that stupid questions exist because I´ve asked a few myself. I´m grateful to my interlocutor for the patience he or she showed.

I asked a few questions on my interview - like three or four solid ones. Then when between being hired and being flown to KSA, I asked several dozen more about the compound, visa application process, the city proper etc, etc. Not all my questions were answered, but enough that I had confidence I wasn't going to arrive to the airport greeted by a paper bag over my head.

You shouldn't be dominating the interview with questions, but a wise applicant should be inquisitive and these questions give a good overview.

On that note, one should definitely ask questions about what their town is like - are there supermarkets or particular restaurants nearby and such.

I've been in KSA for many years. If someone asked me what my town in KSA was "like", I don't know what I could say. In fact, the longer I stay here the less I know about the place. In addition, I have long since given up mentioning where I live, let alone "explain" what it's like.

These type of questions ("are there restaurants nearby..??") are really at the CHIT CHAT level......they're not really "interview" questions.

"What is the punishment for absconding ?" I kid you not. local papers still carry ads 'Notice of Escaped Employee"

Not often teachers and more often people who handle money, but it does illustrate how some foreign workers are viewed !
