Roppongi got dangerous with those yakuza and Nigerians enticing people to enter places, spike the drinks and extort money.
Itaewon is good value for the money, for yakiniku, beer or coffee.
I think I found Smithwick's in Itaewon (it is from Belfast). |

Yes you cannot compare Itaewon with a similar place in Japan. |
Roppongi used to have many American military guys like Itaewon. That said, Itaewon feels like the set of MASH tv show with many shop sellers calling out to you in broken English "You need suit? I have good suit." And shops selling gaijin size clothing (albeit at high prices).
Itaewon is quite a nice place (before it gets dark). Too bad Tokyo does not have one. |
Ever been to Ueuno Station on the Yamanote LIne? There are markets around there and near Okachi Machi Station. They are much bigger and more diverse than those in Itaewon and the food around there as well as in the surrounding shopping districts is better. The different kebab places are good to try, the ramen is great, and then there are a lot of cafes and restaurants around.
Thanks to the Chinese tourists there are good sports clothes shops that have endless bargains for genuine sports brands, there is a Shoe Plaza that has great sales of Adidas etc, there is a decent ABC, there is a store that sells military clothing and goods, there are other clothes stores. Take a trip there and see how much better it is than Itaewon - though I also like Itaewon it's gone upmarket with a Korean people only preference in some cases. |

I haven't been to Ueno in a while, but I can't see how it could be better than Itaewon. Does Ueno have good Mexican restaurants, craft beer bars, fresh burger restaurants, international supermarkets run by south east asians and a Canadian pub? Itaewon does.
Itaewon is the kind of place where if you're tired of Korean food and dealing with Korean merchants, you can escape from them.
I completely agree with mitsui's comment. I don't know any such place in Tokyo.
For a foreigner coming from a multicultural country as in my case, as much as I like Japanese food and people, I sometimes want to deal with and mix with other cultures. You can find foreign shops in Tokyo, but they tend to be spread all over the city.
I am quite well-traveled in Asia. The only other place that I've come across that resembles a foreign neighborhood like Itaewon is Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong.
Maybe I need to visit Malaysia and Singapore for cultural diversity in Asia. |
