I've been to about 100 buffets and self-serve breakfasts, I'd estimate, in my entire life. This includes a few in hotels in Thailand. I never witnessed anything like this. Maybe I was just lucky. Seriously, anybody suggesting Chinese table manners are no worse than most other countries is simply in denial. Things might vary within China from place to place, but generally they are simply awful. Why try to sugar coat it? Just tell it like it is. The Chinese tourists in Thailand are mostly the lower end of the economic scale, and eating habits reflect their life experience, education and social status.

Absolutely we all know that Chinese tourists are shovel shrimp crazy.... I agree with you River.... those who dine at buffets are mostly the lower end of the economic scale no matter what country and eating habits reflect their life experience, education and social status.

But I've been to 'lower end' hotels in Thailand with breakfast buffets and it was full of Bangladeshis and Indians [I knew because they asked if they could sit at our table] didn't see a single one of those kind of actions. So even 'low end' people from a poorer country than China still behaves better.

And this excuse of economical level means no manners doesn't play out when you visit India and everyone says thanks and please and know how to queue up.

Wow! A huge thank you to everyone who contributed. I will spend all of Monday putting this together for my students.

OhBud: You are both right and wrong. I see MAINLAND Chinese as the most disgusting people I have encountered anywhere in the world. There is very little I find redeeming in the social customs of these people (I am being generous in the use of that word). However, after having grown up around Chinese and spending much time in HK and Taiwan, I have learned better than to lump all Chinese people into the same basket.

Thankfully, I have just one more year on my contract and then I will never have to explain Western manners to clueless and spoiled brats again.

Volver you forget that we are not allowed to honestly believe that the chinese are ill mannered. Even if we have been to many places, you have alot of people on here on the payroll of the Chinese govt [they'll deny it] who are there to defend them.

When there is endless articles about poor travelling Chinese, opening doors, spitting, fighting, being rude, not understanding local culture etc. then it's simply undefendable.

But on this forum it's pretty much become half wumaos and then half people who just get cut down if they DARE criticize the Chinese state.

So, in terms of this form, Chinese people, in my opinion, are the best in the world. The smartest, the most innovative, the most likable, friendly, non xenophobic people in the world.

I didn't say everyone is on the payroll, but it's so blatent when many of us say 'the pollution in Beijing is bad!' and some people come forward and say 'but in New York it's worse!'

And I enjoy many things here, I'm not going to say 'I found the gaming community good' or 'open minded students are great' or 'the girls are great' am I?

For newbies it's probably assumed people will be friendly, do you go to a foreign country assuming they won't be? You assume it will be safe, so you want to hear the truth about the bad parts, what to look for.

Imagine someone who has lived in the UK and had good landlords all his life and suddenly he gets screwed in his first place in China.

'Damn, I wish someone had told me.'

I'm currently not in China but I will be coming back because I received offers that I couldn't refuse! :)

Chinese do not have "bad" table manners; the manners are just different from our western countries. Each country has its own customs, traditions, and characteristics. We cannot judge people by other countries' standards. In China, we must follow specific table customs. For example, we should serve the guest of honor first, and we must use chopsticks politely and not leave them sticking up from our rice or other food, for this can resemble traditional Chinese funerary practices. We should respect Chinese culture while we are guests in China. I am an American and I try my best to respect local customs and norms.
